New York, NY, U.S.A.: Simon and Schuster, 1979. Grey paper on boards, black cloth on spine. Endpapers maps. Volume has minor wear. Jacket is slightly worn edges. Now in clear cover. "There was indeed a Bridge on the River Kwai; in reality it was built at bayonet point by Allied prisoners of war. This book is a stirring true account of what happened to the prisoners afterward. A Japanese decision was made that after the bridge was built, the fittest of the POWs would be sent to Japan to work in mines and factories. As a result more than 2,000 Australian and British POWs were jammed into a single hold on each of two ships, the Rakuyo Maru and the Kachidoki Maru. A military convoy including the two ships set out to pick its way through the Allied submarine blockade, almost inevitably the ships were sunk by American submarines that had no idea that the Allied POWs were aboard. After spending 24 to 40 hours in the water the majority of the POWs from the Kachidoki Maru were picked up by Japanese vessels and sent to POW camps in Japan, where many failed to survive. The 1300 Allied troops from the Rakuyo Maru were down to 250 by the harrowing fourth day when the message got through to the American submarines that the survivors were largely Australians and British, some of the Japanese crew, and the Korean guards. By that time, only 159 survivors were picked up and all but 7 of them lived. Joan and Clay Blair were able to locate and interview almost every one of them." . First Edition. Hard Cover.
