Stephen Shapiro, Tina Forrester, David Craig:
Ultra Hush-hush - Taschenbuch

ISBN: 1550377787

[SR: 438166], Paperback, [EAN: 9781550377781], Annick Press, Annick Press, Book, [PU: Annick Press], Annick Press, With the popularity of films like Spy Kids 2 and Agent Cody Banks, the secret world of espionage is as "in" as it's ever been. But kids who think the gadgets and daring escapes in today's spy movies are pretty cool may be interested to learn that some of the most spectacular developments in espionage date back 60 years ago to the Second World War. In Ultra Hush-Hush: Espionage and Special Missions, Stephen Shapiro (a recipient of the Canadian War Museum History Award) and Tina Forrester prove that, when it comes to spy games, truth is usually stranger than fiction. This first volume in Annick Press's Outwitting the Enemy: Stories from the Second World War series spills the beans on talented spies and saboteurs from both sides of the conflict. Middle readers are introduced to the British double agent who convinced Hitler that he'd blown up a munitions factory by covering it with painted canvas, as well as the audacious SS officer who rescued Nazi ally Benito Mussolini from a heavily guarded mountaintop ski resort. This lushly illustrated nonfiction book also covers technological coups such as the invention of the underwater torpedoes used by Italian "frogmen" to plant explosives on enemy ships and Britain's cracking of the Germans' famous secret-code-producing machine, the Enigma. The focus on espionage is sure to guarantee strong interest; however, this book is less successful as a primer on World War II. While Ultra Hush-Hush is replete with sidebars on everything from Hitler's rise to the Manhattan Project, timeframes and events are so jumbled together that it would require a 10-year-old code-breaker to decipher the chronology of the war. --Lisa Alward, 1040638, Specialty Stores, 2205888011, Custom Stores, 126072011, Books Search, 15746591, Chronicles of Narnia, 15838721, Fall into Cooking, 108718011, Features, 236551011, Deals in Books, 16310491, Podcast, 1003028, Special Features, 108719011, Stores, 116859011, The Da Vinci Code Store, 916520, Books, 937600, Europe, 937588, History, 935948, Children's Books, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 937638, Military & Wars, 937588, History, 935948, Children's Books, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 959978, Teens, 959980, Biographies & Memoirs, 960146, Health, Mind & Body, 959994, History & Historical Fiction, 960008, Horror, 960118, Literature & Fiction, 960010, Mysteries, 960012, Reference, 960106, Religion & Spirituality, 960138, School & Sports, 1099340, Science & Technology, 960036, Science Fiction & Fantasy, 960042, Series, 960166, Social Issues, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books

Spies, special missions, and codes and ciphers! Stories of ingenuity and intrigue from World War II. Enjoy spellbinding World War II stories about people who demonstrated great resourcefulness under pressure and came up with amazing solutions to seemingly impossible problems. For example, a British unit specializing in creating illusions fooled German reconnaissance pilots into thinking bombers had blown up a major British munitions factory. How? By painting a gigantic canvas the size of the factory roof to look as if the roof had gaping holes in it with massive destruction inside! Military messages must be disguised by codes and ciphers. One of the most successful and enduring codes of all time was based on a rare language spoken only by the Navajo. This code was instrumental in the American defeat of the Japanese at several key battles. In fact, the code was so difficult to break that the U.S. military kept it top secret until it was replaced by computer codes in 1968.
