If we look to man, a picture meets the sight in which there is much to be admired, and much to be condemned; his virtues charm the eye of the beholder, whilst, at the same time, his vices present to view a shade of hideous deformity; -if to nature, the same mixture of good and evil is found existing there: clouds, which nourish the earth with moisture, drown its produce by excess of rain, and the sun, whose temperate beams shed joy throughout the world, when withdrawn, or too lavishly bestowed, invariably entails upon mankind the horrors of famine and desolation. Whence, then, do these effects proceed? It is a question which the benighted heathens endeavoured in vain to solve. By the works of nature they were convinced that a secret power guided all her operations, and from the order of causes they were led to the belief of the necessity of a self-existent Being;but, by the existence of evil in those works, their minds became involved in a difficulty in attempting to discover a cause that should produce such apparently opposite effects, and at the same time preserve to om; Godhead the just attributes due to a wise, omnipotent, and beneficent Creator. Thus the Unity of that Being was a point of doctrine rarely admitted, if not utterly rejected. Accordingly the gods of the Ancients were multiplied beyond number: virtue and vice, happiness and misery, in short, every passion which they experienced, and every event which befel them, had each its respective deity.
