Finally in this diary we have a real human voice. And what a voice it is! Ugaki is strident and bullheaded, yet also pensive and self-deprecatory. His is an unfathomable character, really, embodying the paradoxes that made the Japanese foe so maddening to Americans. The work is a fascinating glimpse into the psychology of a Japanese military man, but it is much more than that, of course: as a staff officer and later commander of battleships and air fleets, Ugaki was at the heart of both the strategy and fighting of the naval war. His diary shows in what way important actions of the war were planned and how fought. In all, a splendid and valuable source. " Notes. Selected Bibliography. Index. Appendix 1 is a Chronology of the Admiral's career. Appendix 2 is Names Cited in Text. 24-page b/w photo section, including a full-page map. ., University Of Pittsburgh Press
