It is a superb literary thriller that follows the fluctuating fortunes of Lewis Penn, a junior lawyer working at Madison & Vere. Lewis is an all together familiar character, whether you're a lawyer or not. He shares a flat with a mate from university, he works more hours than he doesn't, he goes for dinner in the canteen downstairs every night, and when he gets the chance he goes for a few pints round the corner with mates from his intake. He is surrounded by over demanding clients and over demanding bosses, and spends his life juggling unrealistic deadlines with his family and friends. Knackered, he is plunged into a new job at short notice and makes a bad (but not earth shattering) mistake. Just like 163a. Acutely aware of the need to succeed, the increasingly perverse logic that he applies as he frantically tries to conceal the error is something most of us will recognise. We've all made mistakes and tried to cover them up (admit it, at least to yourself). Lewis makes a mistake, tries to cover it up, but when the initial mistake solves itself, he has to try to cover up his cover up. And it is at this point that his judgment seriously begins to fail him. A series of events are set in motion which range from meetings with the Ukrainian mafia, romantic liaisons with vivacious corporate spies, a desperate car chase across Washington, and finally a journey all the way back to Lewis' alma mater in Bristol. Whilst desperately trying to cling onto his job and sanity and to keep his mistake concealed, the young lawyer's ordered life at the firm and at home becomes increasingly distant.
