[EAN: 9780801494147], Gebraucht, sehr guter Zustand, [SC: 4.5], [PU: Ithaca : Cornell University Press.], XVI; 273 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Small abrasion. Overall good and clean. - This challenging book explores with great insight the literary and social possibilities open to Victorian women intellectuals. Looking closely at the works of three prominent writers-the political journalist Harriet Martineau, the poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and the novelist George Eliot-Deirdre David asserts that each of them affirmed and yet subverted Victorian patriarchy in her struggle to establish herself in a world of letters controlled by men. Although characterized by these men as "clever and industrious, learned and sensitive, sagacious and brilliant," intellectual women, David says, "were never free from a tension inherent in the Victorian subjugation of woman's mind by male cultural authority. Their writings never cease to betray the conflict between female ambition and dominant Victorian prescriptions for woman’s role and function." David shrewdly assesses the prizes offered and the price paid when Victorian women did achieve cultural power. Along with her close textual analysis of selected works by her three subjects, she probes the nature and implications of women’s higher education and intellectual life in the nineteenth century. Drawing on Antonio Gramsci’s theories of the social function of intellectuals, she questions the findings of some major recent critical and theoretical works on nineteenth-century women writers. She sees Victorian women intellectuals as trying to accomplish two tasks: actively fostering and supporting dominant Victorian ideologies of sex and gender on the one hand while, on the other, struggling fiercely to transform them. Intellectual Women and Victorian Patriarchy is certain to attract and influence a wide range of readers interested in feminist criticism and in the history and literature of Victorian England.
