An Account of the Pelew Islands (Literature of Travel, Exploration and Empire) - gebunden oder broschiert

2002, ISBN: 0718501551

[SR: 5307585], Hardcover, [EAN: 9780718501556], Bloomsbury T&T Clark, Bloomsbury T&T Clark, Book, [PU: Bloomsbury T&T Clark], 2002-09-18, Bloomsbury T&T Clark, In 1783 the East India Company packet, the Antelope, was wrecked on the Pelew Islands (modern Micronesia). Captain Henry Wilson and his crew developed unusually amicable relations with the Palauan inhabitants, and when they departed, the 'prince' Lee Boo went with them to Britain. Lee Boo was a figure of fashionable interest in London, at once highly regarded for his intelligence, yet treated also as an exotic curiosity. His death from smallpox in 1784 occasioned wide regretful comment. An Account of the Pelew Islands is based on extensive interviews with Captain Wilson, Lee Boo and other participants. This new edition reproduces the text and includes essays on its significance for late eighteenth-century European culture and on the Micronesian dimensions of the voyage and the book. Annotations explain and contextualize points of historical and ethnographic significance and the original fine engraved portraits, artifacts and charts as well as clear new maps are included., 10225, Movements & Periods, 10159346011, Ancient & Classical, 10227, Arthurian Romance, 10229, Beat Generation, 10159350011, Feminist, 10243, Gothic & Romantic, 10175, LGBT, 10233, Medieval, 11764668011, Modern, 10236, Modernism, 10238, Postmodernism, 10240, Renaissance, 10159354011, Shakespeare, 10245, Surrealism, 489654, Victorian, 10204, History & Criticism, 17, Literature & Fiction, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 12051, Travel, 12015, Writing, 5267707011, Writing, Research & Publishing Guides, 21, Reference, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 271638011, General, 16854, Australia & South Pacific, 27, Travel, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 468236, Literature, 491406, American Literature, 491394, Creative Writing & Composition, 491408, English Literature, 491404, Literary Theory, 684272011, World Literature, 468206, Humanities, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books, 468230, History, 491410, Africa, 684268011, Ancient, 491412, Asia, 491414, Europe, 491418, Latin America, 684269011, Middle East, 684270011, Military, 491422, United States, 468206, Humanities, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books

[EAN: 9780718501556], Neubuch, [PU: Bloomsbury Publishing PLC], History|Australia & New Zealand|General, BRAND NEW, An Account of the Pelew Islands, Karen L. Nero, Nicholas Thomas, George Keate, In 1783, the East India Company packet, the Antelope was wrecked in the Pelew Islands (now Pelau or Belau in the western Carolines, in Micronesia). Captain Henry Wilson and his crew developed unusually amicable relations with the Palauan inhabitants and participated in expeditions against their enemies. They were able to recover a great deal from the wreck and to build a new vessel, with which they sailed to Macau after a stay of just over three months. They took with them Lee Boo, who became a figure of fashionable interest in London. Using extensive interviews with Captain Wilson and other participants, including Lee Boo, George Keate wrote "An Account of the Pelew Islands". The text is reprinted here in a critical edition. It represents a genre of literary interest in non-European cultures that was sentimentally rather than scientifically framed. It is distictive in its account of the encounter between two cultures, for its anthropologically-minded account of Palauan culture and society, and as one of the fullest 18th-century accounts of a Pacific society.
