Crusade: The Untold Story of the Persian Gulf War - Taschenbuch

2000, ISBN: 9780395710838

Gebundene Ausgabe, ID: 330238042

Virago Press, London, 1996. Trade Paperback. Good. Covers have light creasing. Edges of covers have superficial wear. Spine has minor lean and moderate reading creases. Pages are reasonably tanned. This novel conjures up a menacing 22nd-century England fragmented by civil war. City-dwellers live under massive surveillance, and in fear of mindchecks and committals from the Keepers, the ruthless ruling clan who impose their own brand of peace at the expense of knowledge and freedom. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Fiction; Thrillers; ISBN: 1853818380. ISBN/EAN: 9781853818387. Inventory No: 10024196.. 9781853818387, Virago Press, 1996, New Delhi, India: Lotus/Roli Books When Mahatma Gandhi set off for the historic Dandi March on 12 March 1930, why did he choose salt as a symbol of British imperialism? Why did the East India Company throttle, then kill the salt industry in Bengal and Orissa? Why did the British build a hedge that stretched over 3000 km just to thwart salt smuggling? Salt, that innocuous substance we dismiss as common salt, has played an uncommon role in the history of mankind. Wars have been fought over it, kings and emperors have enriched their treasuries by imposing tax on it, odes have been written on it, it even played a role in the French Revolution. Myths and superstitions have grown around it, babies are baptised with it and evil spirits are banished by it. The Romance of Salt takes you on a fascinating journey through history featuring this magical substance. You will never look at a salt shaker in the same way again. Printed Pages: 228.. Hardcover. New/New., Lotus/Roli Books, New York: Penguin Books, 1990. 606 Pages Indexed. Some minor cover corner and edge wear. A hint of age-tanning to borders of some pages. No marks or stamps to this straight tight book. Illustrated with maps and black and white photographs. The Second World War is the largest single event in human history, fought across six of the world's seven continents and all its oceans. It killed fifty million human beings, left hundreds of millions of others wounded in mind or body and materially devastated much of the heartland of civilisation. No attempt to relate its causes, course and consequences in the space of a single volume can fully succeed. Rather than narrate it as a continuous sequence of events, therefore, I decided from the outset to divide the story of the war into four topics - narrative, strategic analysis, battle piece and 'theme of war' - and to use these four topics to carry forward the history of the six main sections into which the war falls: the War in the West, 1939-43; the War in the East, 1941-3; the War in the Pacific, 1941-3; the War in the West, 1943-5; the War in the East, 1943-5; and the War in the Pacific, 1943-5. Each section is introduced by a piece of strategic analysis, centring on the figure to whom the initiative most closely belonged at that time - in order, Hitler, Tojo, Churchill, Stalin and Roosevelt - and then contains, besides the appropriate passages of narrative, both a relevant 'theme of war' and a battle piece. Each of the battle pieces has been chosen to illustrate the nature of a particular form of warfare characteristic of the conflict. They are air warfare (the Battle of Britain) , airborne warfare (the Battle of Crete), carrier warfare (Midway), armoured warfare (Falaise), city warfare (Berlin) and amphibious warfare (Okinawa). The 'themes of war' include war supply, war production, occupation and repression, strategic bombing, resistance and espionage, and secret weapons. It is my hope that this scheme of treatment imposes a little order for the reader on the chaos and tragedy of the events I relate. --- From the Foreword.. 6th Printing. Trade Paperback. Very Good. 7" x 9 "., Penguin Books, 1990, Random House. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 2000. Hardcover. 0679456503 . 1.26 x 9.29 x 6.54 Inches; 384 pages; Perhaps no other American historical figure is as shrouded in legend as General Robert E. Lee. Long extolled as the perfect gentleman as well as the consummate military commander, Lee—known as the Marble Man—has been venerated more than understood. During his lifetime, he contributed to this picture through the austerity and rigid control he tried to impose on himself.

The Making of Robert E. Lee reveals the flesh-and-blood Lee—not to expose him but to better understand a man who was perhaps the most fervent practitioner of the Southern code of conduct, behind which he camouflaged much of his character.

With unprecedented insight into Robert E. Lee's personal and public lives, Michael Fellman humanizes this one-dimensional icon, placing him within history rather than above it. With both detachment and compassion, Fellman deftly probes beneath the surface to show Lee as a deeply conflicted man, one with sometimes surprising views on sexuality, family, religion, and politics, as well as military practice. This realistic portrayal situates Lee firmly in the contexts of his time, place, class, gender, and race.

Although Lee tried to be a virtuous, even perfect man, he often flirted extravagantly—and perhaps did more—with women other than his wife. While he strove to be a kind and honest leader, he was extremely distant from and controlling of both his sons and the soldiers in his Civil War army. With his deeply ingrained habits of command, Lee the aristocratic disciplinarian looked down upon the white lower orders as he did upon slaves.

After a distinguished if conventional career in the peacetime American army, Lee chose to join the Confederate cause on account of his unquestioning identification with the values and interests of the Virginia slaveholding class. Something of a failure during the first year of combat, Lee was thrust into command at a crucial juncture in the war, just as the Union army approached Richmond, the Confederate capital. Fellman argues that "the Civil War rescued Robert E. Lee from marginality and obscurity."

No general proved more audacious and tenacious than Lee, and none had a greater passion for battle. For a year, almost without exception, an increasingly confident Lee guided a seemingly invincible army, winning great victories at high costs. Finally overreaching the capabilities of his troops, Lee led them into crushing defeat at Gettysburg, after which his customary humility returned.

Paradoxically, even though war ultimately reinforced Lee's deep pessimism in the face of Fate, afterward he became a conscious inspiration and adviser to elite whites who sought to destroy Reconstruction and keep blacks at the bottom of the social order. he became a spokesman as well as a rallying point for those postwar Southern nationalists who sought, with success, to maintain and strengthen white supremacy.

Fellman's study does far more than any previous book both to uncover the intelligent, ambitious, and often troubled man behind the legend and to explore his life within the social, cultural, and political contexts of the mid-nineteenth-century South.

., Random House, 2000, Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1993. 575 Pages Indexed. During the Persian Gulf War, the Pentagon imposed unprecedented restrictions on the media's access to the battlefield. But in this definitive account of the war the author pierces the military's veil of secrecy and follows the unfolding battle from the first night to the final day, providing vivid accounts of bombing runs and White House strategy sessions, firefights and bitter interservice conflicts. He expertly weaves invividual stories into a thrilling epic narrative, we come to undertand that the allied campaign against Hussein was a wholly different kind of war, one lthat transformed the very nature of modern warfare. Only after the guns fall silent cant the real story of a battle be told, and in this book RickAtkinson does full justice to our remarkable triumph in Iraq. . First Printing. Trade Paperback.
