Daniel Patrick Moynihan:
Secrecy: The American Experience - Taschenbuch

2007, ISBN: 0300080794

[SR: 1975522], Paperback, [EAN: 9780300080797], Yale University Press, Yale University Press, Book, [PU: Yale University Press], Yale University Press, Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-NY) was one of the first members of the United States government openly to predict the imminent collapse of the Soviet Union--and, by extension, statist communism--as far back as the late '70s, as political historian Richard Gid Powers reminds readers in a lengthy introduction (comprising approximately one-fifth of Secrecy's total length). Had we spent less time trying to gather secret information about the Soviets and more time openly discussing rather easily interpretable data, Sen. Moynihan argues, we might have been far less paranoid about the supposed Red menace. The problem, he writes, lies in the essential nature of government secrecy: "Departments and agencies hoard information, and the government becomes a kind of market. Secrets become organizational assets, never to be shared save in exchange for another organization's assets.... The system costs can be enormous. In the void created by absent or withheld information, decisions are either made poorly or not at all." Sen. Moynihan draws upon several incidents to make his point, from the Army's deliberate withholding from President Harry Truman of information about Soviet spy rings to the disastrous 1961 invasion of Cuba at the Bay of Pigs to the Iran-Contra affair. The senator knows whereof he speaks; he was for eight years a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. Secrecy ably combines hands-on experience and historical perspective, calling for the United States to take advantage of the new era in international relations to implement policies that once again encourage the open, uninhibited flow of information among government agencies and, whenever possible, the public. --Ron Hogan, 236551011, Deals in Books, 236580011, All Deals, 236552011, Arts & Photography, 236553011, Biographies & Memoirs, 236554011, Business & Investing, 1259672011, Calendars, 236555011, Children's Books, 236556011, Comics & Graphic Novels, 236557011, Computers & Internet, 236558011, Cooking, Food & Wine, 236559011, Entertainment, 236560011, Gay & Lesbian, 267547011, Health, Mind & Body, 1259673011, History, 236561011, Home & Garden, 236562011, Literature & Fiction, 236563011, Mystery & Thrillers, 236564011, Nonfiction, 236565011, Outdoors & Nature, 236566011, Parenting & Families, 236567011, Reference, 236568011, Religion & Spirituality, 236569011, Romance, 236570011, Science, 236571011, Science Fiction & Fantasy, 1259674011, Sports, 236572011, Teens, 236573011, Travel, 1259623011, Livres Francophones, 1040638, Specialty Stores, 916520, Books, 2205888011, Custom Stores, 7187330011, Amazon Publishing, 13901671, Audiobooks, 14244971, Bargain Books, 13621591, Boxed Sets, 194725011, Canada Day Deals, 377366011, Christian Living Store, 263003011, For Dummies Store, 2354164011, Formats, 714830011, Kids & Family Store, 370821011, Qualifying Textbooks - Fall 2007, 1040638, Specialty Stores, 916520, Books, 928242, United States, 928244, 19th Century, 928258, 20th Century, 1199740, 21st Century, 928298, African Americans, 928308, Civil War, 928346, Colonial Period, 928356, Revolution & Founding, 928152, Americas, 927728, History, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 928848, United States, 928850, 19th Century, 928864, 20th Century, 1199742, 21st Century, 928904, African Americans, 928914, Civil War, 928952, Colonial Period, 928962, Revolution & Founding, 927728, History, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 927788, Politics, 927996, Current Events, 929280, History & Theory, 929282, Ideologies, 929288, International, 929298, Labour & Industrial Relations, 929300, Labour Unions, 929302, Leadership, 929304, Political Parties, 929306, Practical Politics, 929308, Reference, 929310, Regional Planning, 929312, Terrorism, 929314, United States, 5489589011, Politics & Social Sciences, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 16037521, Government, 16037211, Political Science, 930140, Social Sciences, 5489589011, Politics & Social Sciences, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 16037571, Public Administration, 16037211, Political Science, 930140, Social Sciences, 5489589011, Politics & Social Sciences, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 16037661, United States, 16037211, Political Science, 930140, Social Sciences, 5489589011, Politics & Social Sciences, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books
