Cosima Wagner was the wife of the composer, Richard Wagner, but she was much more than that. The love-child of Franz Liszt and Marie d'Agoult, she was intelligent, gifted, and endowed with a strength of purpose and of character that overcame all obstacles. At the age of twenty she married the first great Wagnerian conductor, Hans von Bulow. Twelve years later, after bearing him two children, she left him to join Richard Wagner, a man twenty-four years her elder (and several inches shorter) . From that moment on, her life was consecrated to his genius. In his service she became adept in diplomacy and deceit; she could coax, wheedle, flatter, lie as circumstances demanded; she dealt with cabinet ministers, tradesmen, architects and singers; and, after Wagner's death (she outlived him by forty-seven years) , she became the sole heir to his authority and interpreter of his wishes. This is a portrait of a fascinating, sometimes frightening, woman moving imperiously thorugh a world of men of whom only one was her equal. " Born: December 25, 1837, Bellagio, Lombardy, Italy. Died: April 1, 1930, Bayreuth, Germany ... Index. Bibliography.
