2002, ISBN: 0198163835

[SR: 1769172], Hardcover, [EAN: 9780198163831], OUP Oxford, OUP Oxford, Book, [PU: OUP Oxford], 2002-11-07, OUP Oxford, Charles Villiers Stanford is invariably remembered as the teacher of many of Britain's first generation of twentieth-century composers, and as the author of many much-loved works for the Anglican liturgy. He was, however, a composers fo great diversity and vision. A symphonist, songwriter, and composer of the Requiem, the Stabat Mater, the memorable, Songs of the Sea, Songs of the Fleet, and the haunting setting of Mary Coleridge's 'The Blue Bird', he aspired most of all to be a successful operatic composer though in this province of composition his fortunes were plagued by disappointment and neglect. More cosmopolitan in outlook than his contemporary, Parry, he was driven by ambition and a sense of mission to advance the cause of British music not only as a composer but as a university professor, practical musician, and public proselyte. Pre-eminent in the 1880s and 90s, he was eclipsed by Elgar during the Edwardian years. Resentment, fuelled by the hurt of Elgar's inaugural Birmingham lecture, served to accentuate an innate irascibility and truculence which blighted his friendships and professional life. Nevertheless, Stanford must be recognised as one of the most natural musical talents Britain has ever produced, which is evident in the extraordinary breadth of his creative output, which, on closer acquaintance, reveals a fecund originality shaped by classical equipoise and fertile melodic gift., 516722, Classical Music, 512314, Music, 268003, Film, Television & Music, 67, Biography, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 512324, Opera, 512314, Music, 268003, Film, Television & Music, 67, Biography, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 268022, Britain, 758990, Early British to Anglo-Saxon: BCE-1000 AD, 758994, Norman to Medieval: 1001-1500, 758996, Tudors & Stuarts: 1501-1700, 758998, Georgian to Victorian: 1701-1900, 759000, 1901 Onwards, 758914, Military, 268064, Royalty, 758916, Social & Urban History, 268021, Historical, 67, Biography, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 758858, Religious, 67, Biography, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 4119291, Film Studies, 270433, Film, 73, Music, Stage & Screen, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 512232, Choral, 512212, Classical Music, 267324, Styles, 267294, Music, 73, Music, Stage & Screen, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 267311, Orchestral, 512212, Classical Music, 267324, Styles, 267294, Music, 73, Music, Stage & Screen, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 516720, Biographies, 512212, Classical Music, 267324, Styles, 267294, Music, 73, Music, Stage & Screen, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 516726, Scores, Songbooks & Lyrics, 512212, Classical Music, 267324, Styles, 267294, Music, 73, Music, Stage & Screen, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 267382, Classical Music, 267378, Scores, Songbooks & Lyrics, 267294, Music, 73, Music, Stage & Screen, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 516732, Composers & Musicians, 516734, Classical Music, 516736, Rock & Other Styles, 267294, Music, 73, Music, Stage & Screen, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 267386, Musical Theory, 267372, Musical Theory & Composition, 267294, Music, 73, Music, Stage & Screen, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 274876, Drama, 275389, Poetry, Drama & Criticism, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books

Details zum Buch
Charles Villiers Stanford: Man and Musician

One of Britain's most gifted and productive composers, Stanford (1852-1924) is perhaps best known for his church music, but he was also an eminent symphonist, songwriter, and author of many fine choral works. Cosmopolitan, ambitious, and pragmatic, he was untiring in his efforts to advance the cause of British music during its renaissance at the end of the nineteenth century, promoting the music of his contemporaries, and the many pupils he taught at Cambridge and the Royal College of Music.
