2012. Hardcover. New. The democratic ethos in Sikkim is now nearly three and half decades old. Until 1975, this Himalayan state was under the rule of Namgyal dynasty which lasted for more than 300 years. The end of Namgyal administration led to the change in the political system of the state from centralised monarchical to liberal democratic system. This change indeed had its impact on the society economy and polity of the region. Sikkim's progress towards democracy and stability was marked by two historic developments first the introduction of electoral system based on adult suffrage and second was the abolition of the institution of monarchy in 1970s. The constitutional changes that took place following the 1973 uprising and Government of Sikkim Act 1974 led to a dramatic change in political and economic institutions that had important implications for the future of democracy. The change in political institutions led to the formation of representative government which ensures greater participation of people in the decision making processes. The Government of Sikkim Act 1974 removed many of the worst inequities under the old political system where only few aristocrats and nobles were the part of the governmental system. The act also established the right to vote based uniformly on the basis of universal adult suffrage. The post-merger Sikkim paid special attention in different directions with necessary measures to make its society modern and developed. Contents:- Contents: Preface. 1. The subject of this book is Political Science, 2012, New Delhi, India: Oxford University Press, 2009. Since the late nineteenth century, theatre has remained central to social and political movements in India. An important forum for progressive writers and political activists in the early twentieth century, it has served to raise concerns in post-Independence India as well. Modern Indian Theatre brings together critical essays, excerpts, and theoretical and political statements that reflect upon the changing visions for theatre since the late nineteenth century. Representing a wide spectrum of perspectives including those of playwrights-directors themselves, important voices in theatre criticism and history, practice, and direction, the articles reveal the multifaceted, hybrid, and contested formations of modern Indian theatre. The writings address questions relating to theatre’s negotiation with issues of class, caste, and gender; the ways in which ‘nation’ came to be imagined at critical historical moments; the response of drama to the emergence and domination of mass media, and the proliferation and influence of Western media in India; and the role of actors and the myriad meanings of scenery, performance spaces, architecture, and language. With a perceptive Introduction by Nandi Bhatia that enables an informed understanding of theatre’s ambivalent and paradoxical relationship to ‘modernity’, this reader will engage and inform students and teachers of Indian theatre and performance studies, theatre critics, as well as general readers.. Autor:

Nandi Bhatia

Titel:

Modern Indian Theatre: A Reader

ISBN-Nummer:

India has witnessed a steady increase in dramatic activity since the late nineteenth century through multiple forms and practices. Modern Indian Theatre: An Anthology brings together writings that speak to the historical contexts from which such practices emerged-colonization, cultural suppression and appropriation, intercultural transformations brought about by the impact of the colonial forces, and acute critical engagement with socio-political issues brought about by the hopes and failures of Independence. The volume addresses pertinent questions like how drama influences social change, the response of drama to the emergence and domination of mass media and the proliferation and influence of western media in India, and how mediations of gender, class, and caste influence drama, its language, forms, and aesthetics.
