Crean isn't afraid to acknowledge her deeply personal attachment to her subject (she was inspired to research Carr while babysitting a small canvas the Victoria, British Columbia-based Carr painted while studying in France). Equally brave is Crean's postmodern juxtaposition of three interwoven streams of text: art historical, fictionalized first-person biographical narrative, and a discussion of political and historical events and their impact on British Columbia's indigenous population. The scholarship is solid--there are 61 pages of end notes, indices, and bibliography--and the fictionalized passages make compelling reading.

Crean, an art historian, cultural activist, and author of works including Who's Afraid of Canadian Culture and the biography of a union leader, Grace Hartman: A Woman for Her Time, reveals here the many faces--and enduring accomplishments--of Emily Carr. While Carr's paintings are now compared to those of international peers Georgia O'Keeffe and Frida Kahlo (notably in Sharyn Udall's Places of Their Own), in her lifetime it was her writing, not her art, that brought her fame. Carr's autobiographical novel Klee Wyck, in fact, won the 1942 Governor General's Award for literature. But, finally, it's in the political analysis that Crean truly excels. Carr emerges as a pioneering environmentalist and advocate of Northwest Coastal culture, despite being very much the product of a repressive colonial society. --Deirdre Hanna
