A member of the Church Missionary Society, Lloyd was sent to Uganda to preach the Gospel to its unfortunate inhabitants in 1894. Landing in Zanzibar, Lloyd made his way westwards through modern day Tanzania ('German East Africa') and around Lake Victoria before reaching the Toro (or Batoro) region in southwestern Uganda, where he was to spend much of the next two years.His narrative details not only local customs and curiosities, but also the ongoing impact of conflicts in the area, including a plot against British forces supposedly organised by the Kabaka of Burganda Mwanga II (who, 'ever being a most arrant coward', p. 231, was forced to flee to Tanzania), the 1895 Batetela rebellion in the Congo Free State, and the revolt of Sudanese troops in eastern Uganda in 1897. For those interested primarily in the curiosities however there is still much to admire here: from his account of the titular pygmy nation (p. 309 ff.) to a 'red-letter day for the people of Mupe': Lloyd terrifying a tribe of cannibals by riding a bicycle (or 'snake') through their village (pp. 358-360). Albert Lloyd was a missionary sent to Central Africa. This book documents his four years of work as a missionary, the trials he faced and the people he met. With an introduction by Sir John Kennaway, a Conservative politician and Member of Parliament. He was also the President of the Church Missionary Society, which sent Lloyd to Africa. Signed by the author to the recto of front endpaper 'With love and Every Good Wish from Albert B Lloyd'. With a frontispiece, thirteen plates, and a further one-hundred and thirty-three in text illustrations and photographs. Collated; complete. In the original publisher"s cloth binding. Externally, sound. Light rubbing to the boards and spine, and fading to the spine. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. Hinges are tender. Tidemark to the front board. Gilt to the front board and spine have faded. Tidemarks and damp staining to the front pastedown and to the recto of the front endpaper, and to a couple of pages throughout. Front endpaper is loosening at hinge. Offsetting to the rear pastedown. Signed by the author to the blank page, "With love & every good wish, from Albert B Lloyd, 19th 99", and a prior owner"s ink inscription alongside "Mary Masters". Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright. The odd spot and odd instance of damp staining throughout. Good Only<
