Howgego P9. Although our copy lacks the errata slip, it nevertheless contains the uncorrected errors expected for the first edition of this work. A signed letter from Captain Parry laid in, addressed to a Cheyne (Captain George Cheyne, a long-time friend of Captain Parry's). The letter states that Captain Parry is on a short holiday and is glad to be away from the bustle of London and from his "Hydrographic office". He promises to forward a letter to Captain (John) Ross' nephew (James Clark Ross, one of the crew members on the expedition recorded in this volume) on behalf of Cheyne, and explains why he cannot accompany Cheyne on a star-gazing expedition. The letter is dated June 15th, 1826, and has the remains of its wax seal. A lovely record of a friendship between two navy men and explorers. Parry's expedition, the results of which are recorded here, was in-part inspired by a drive to prove Captain John Ross wrong about Lancaster Sound being a closed inlet. Parry was a beloved commander and kept his crew well-fed and well-entertained during much of the arctic voyage. The party sailed through Lancaster Sound and advanced west to Melville Island (named by Parry). The crew wintered in a cove on Melville Island. They would return to Lancaster sound in August of 1820. Although he did not discover the North-West passage, Parry's research and numerous voyages laid important groundwork for the region to be mapped and charted over the next several decades. Our copy lacks two plates, the errata slip, and the leaves show one archival tape repair to a corner, scattered browning.<
