The addition of a chapter touching the ascent of Mont Blanc, seems almost to call for a word of apology; but we have grown so familiar with the name of Mont Blan, that I think we are apt to fanct we know him better than we really do. The chapter entitled 'Hints to Pedestrians' I have omitted from the body of the work. The practical portions will be found reprinted in the Appendix. Three wood-cut maps accompany this Edition. They make no pretension to accuracy; they are no intended, and must not be relied up, as guide-maps, but are inserted merely for the purpose of rendering the description more intelligible.
