The Global Worlds of the Swahili: Interfaces of Islam, Identity and Space in 19th and 20th-Century East Africa (Beitrage zur Afrikaforschung) - Taschenbuch

ISBN: 3825897699

[SR: 4037847], Paperback, [EAN: 9783825897697], LIT Verlag, LIT Verlag, Book, [PU: LIT Verlag], LIT Verlag, This multidisciplinary volume challenges established ideas about "the world of the Swahili," proposing a perspective that highlights the transitory, shifting, and plural character of East African coastal societies, worldviews, and identities. The contributors give inside accounts of the broad spectrum of local perceptions of the world in the wider Swahili context. They demonstrate how these perceptions have been shaped by the interconnections of the East African coast with other geographical spaces and cultural spheres (especially Arabia, the Indian Ocean, and Europe). Offering new insights into the interaction of local culture, Islam, colonialism, the postcolony, and globalization, the volume shows that the "Swahili" belong to many worlds and continue to cultivate the interfaces between these worlds. The book is the outcome of several years of collaborative research, academic meetings, and individual paper presentations coordinated by the editors under the umbrella of the Collaborative Research Project "Local Agency in Africa in the Context of Global Influences" based at Bayreuth University (Germany) and funded by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft)., 4762, Africa, 15812761, Central Africa, 15812771, East Africa, 15812791, North Africa, 15812781, Southern Africa, 15812801, West Africa, 4763, Algeria, 4764, Angola, 4765, Benin, 4766, Botswana, 2259284011, Burkina Faso, 2259285011, Burundi, 2259286011, Cameroon, 2259287011, Cape Verde, 2259288011, Central African Republic, 2259289011, Chad, 4767, Comoros, 4780, Côte d'Ivoire, 4768, Democratic Republic of Congo, 4769, Djibouti, 4997, Egypt, 4771, Equatorial Guinea, 4772, Eritrea, 4773, Ethiopia, 4774, Gabon, 4775, Gambia, 4777, Ghana, 4778, Guinea, 4779, Guinea Bissau, 4781, Kenya, 4782, Lesotho, 4783, Liberia, 4784, Libya, 4785, Madagascar, 4786, Malawi, 4787, Mali, 4788, Mauritania, 4903, Mauritius, 4789, Morocco, 4790, Mozambique, 4791, Namibia, 4792, Niger, 4793, Nigeria, 2259291011, Republic of the Congo, 4794, Rwanda, 4824, Sao Tome and Principe, 4795, Senegal, 4910, Seychelles, 4796, Sierra Leone, 4797, Somalia, 4798, South Africa, 4799, Sudan, 4800, Swaziland, 4801, Tanzania, 4802, Togo, 4803, Tunisia, 4804, Uganda, 4805, Western Sahara, 4806, Zambia, 4807, Zimbabwe, 9, History, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 6343235011, Ethnic & Tribal, 6343224011, Religious, 5035, World, 9, History, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 11232, Social Sciences, 3048861, Children's Studies, 13022421, Communication & Media Studies, 11005, Criminology, 11244, Customs & Traditions, 11247, Demography, 10555, Disaster Relief, 11251, Emigration & Immigration, 11256, Folklore & Mythology, 11258, Gender Studies, 11270, Gerontology, 10775, Holidays, 11272, Human Geography, 69845, Library & Information Science, 11986, Linguistics, 11274, Methodology, 16233621, Museum Studies & Museology, 11276, Philanthropy & Charity, 4556, Popular Culture, 11280, Pornography, 10576, Poverty, 11282, Reference, 11284, Research, 11286, Social Work, 11298, Specific Demographics, 11324, Urban Planning & Development, 3825161, Violence in Society, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 11235, Cultural, 11233, Anthropology, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 11237, General, 11233, Anthropology, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 491410, Africa, 468230, History, 468206, Humanities, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books, 491448, Anthropology, 468214, Social Sciences, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books
