Scholarly Research Paper from the year 2011 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, printed single-sided, grade: A, The Open University, language: English, comment: The first text is an extract from a book 'Meeting the Guv'nor' by Alan Mortlock. The second chosen text is a song by Queen Bohemian Rhapsody. , abstract: I will apply close textual analyses to an everyday text and a text that would be considered literary in the canonical sense of the word. The first text is an extract from a book 'Meeting the Guv'nor' by Alan Mortlock. The second chosen text is a song by Queen Bohemian Rhapsody. Both texts use creative English language to deal with a common theme of a crime confession, trial and retribution but the texts differ greatly in style. I will start by defining creativity and literariness. 'Creativity is the ability to produce work that is both novel (i.e. Original, unexpected) and appropriate (i.e. Adaptive concerning task constraints) (Sternberg, 1999:3 in Carter 2004:47)Creativity has textual, sociocultural and cognitive dimensions. I would like to analyse my chosen texts in terms of all three. Creativity can be found in all literacy practices, both in the way that texts are read and interpreted or constructed. (Papen and Tusting quoted in Maybin and Swann 2004:312) Papen and Tusting define creativity as 'making something which is new, which did not exist before the creative act' or 'making something which is original, which is unlike things that have been made before' (ibid) Papen and Tusting claim that 'all meaning making processes have a creative element.' ( ibid) Carter (1999 quoted in Maybin & Swann 2006 p. 10) described literary language as 'socially and culturally determined'. Eagleteon (1983 p. 11 quoted in Goodman & O'Halloran 2006 p. 120) goes on to say that literature is social and ideological and therefore changes over time as ideas evolve. Text one is an excerpt from an autobiography and the narrator reports on the events leading up to his imprisonment. My analysis is based upon the theories presented by Mick Short in Exploringthe language of poems, plays and prose: chapter 9-11. The concepts and linguistic terms, used in the following discussion, will be explained during the analysis on examples from the extract itself.I will examine some linguistic means of indicating and manipulating viewpoint.
