Love's Labour's Lost: Third Series - Taschenbuch

ISBN: 1904271103

[SR: 309546], Paperback, [EAN: 9781904271109], Bloomsbury Arden Shakespeare, Bloomsbury Arden Shakespeare, Book, [PU: Bloomsbury Arden Shakespeare], 1998-06-25, Bloomsbury Arden Shakespeare, Book by William Shakespeare, Another example of Shakespeare's comic fascination with the battle between and misunderstanding of the sexes, Love's Labour's Lost is a difficult play to read, but one which is extremely effective on stage. The Play opens with King Ferdinand of Navarre and his courtiers taking a vow of study and sexual abstinence for a period of three years. However, their vows are soon placed under strain with the arrival of the Princess of France and her ladies in waiting. The inevitable happens, and the different couples attempt to surreptitiously communicate, causing much hilarious confusion and embarrassment in the process. Shakespeare deploys every farcical element in the book, including impersonation, wrongly delivered letters, outrageous puns and word play, fights, drunkenness and masquerades, as Ferdinand's entourage soon learn that rather than running from women to books, it is in fact the opposite sex that "are the books, the arts, the academes/That show, contain, and nourish all the world". However, one of the most interesting aspects of the play is that it does not end with everyone marrying and living happily ever after. The women give as good as they get from the men, and in the end turn the tables in extremely interesting ways. One of Shakespeare's most linguistically challenging, but also intelligent comedies. --Jerry Brotton , 941652, Screenplays, 941626, Movies, 941378, Humour & Entertainment, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 932128, British, 932108, Classics, 927790, Literature & Fiction, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 932246, British & Irish, 16037841, 18th Century, 16037851, 19th Century, 16037871, Contemporary, 16037861, Modern, 932240, Drama, 927790, Literature & Fiction, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 932554, Criticism & Theory, 932556, Deconstructionism, 932558, Feminist, 932562, Hermeneutics, 932564, Marxist, 932566, Semiotics, 932568, Sexuality in Literature, 932570, Structuralism, 932552, History & Criticism, 927790, Literature & Fiction, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 932594, United States, 932552, History & Criticism, 927790, Literature & Fiction, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 932624, Poetry, 274707011, African, 274708011, Ancient, Classical & Medieval, 933134, Anthologies, 274709011, Asian, 274710011, Australia & Oceania, 933192, British, 1051150, Canadian, 274711011, Carribean & Latin American, 933136, Chinese, 274706011, Criticism, 933138, Epic, 933140, French, 933144, German, 933146, Inspirational & Religious, 933148, Irish, 933150, Japanese & Haiku, 933174, Limericks & Humourous Verse, 933152, Love Poems, 13804241, Middle Eastern, 933154, Norse & Icelandic Sagas, 933158, Russian, 933160, Single Authors, 933172, Spanish, 933178, United States, 933176, Writing, 927790, Literature & Fiction, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 1080608, History & Criticism, 1080390, United States, 927790, Literature & Fiction, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 15306531, English Literature, 15306451, Literature, 15306041, Humanities, 15115321, Textbooks, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 690371011, Performing Arts, 690372011, Dance, 15306171, Film & Television, 15306121, Music, 15306151, Theater, 15306041, Humanities, 15115321, Textbooks, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books

William Shakespeare:
Love's Labour's Lost (Arden Shakespeare: Third Series) - gebrauchtes Buch

ISBN: 1904271103

ID: 3192167

To begin the introduction, the editor discusses the link between Love's Labour's Lost and the writings of Sir Philip Sidney, the simple plot and its inconclusive ending, the relationship in the play between words and the things which they signify, and the play's concern with the court. The following sections of the introduction examine the play's style, from the structural devices and wordplay typical of Shakespeare to the repetition and allusion that are particularly abundant in this comedy; and the play's structure, with focus on the play's last scene, which is the longest in Shakespeare's work. The editor finally addresses the play's dating and possible sources, its early history and performance, and the subsequent reactions to and criticism of the play. This edition features five appendices that follow the text of Love's Labour's Lost. They include an examination of the play's original texts, additional lines omitted in the text of this edition, and discussions of Moth's name, rhymes, and compound words in the play. Also included are a preface, an index, and lists of illustrations, abbreviations, and references. The Arden Shakespeare has developed a reputation as the pre-eminent critical edition of Shakespeare for its exceptional scholarship, reflected in the thoroughness of each volume. An introduction comprehensively contextualizes the play, chronicling the history and culture that surrounded and influenced Shakespeare at the time of its w comedy, drama, english literature, humanities, humor and entertainment, literature, literature and fiction, teen and young adult, textbooks Humor & Entertainment, Bloomsbury Arden Shakespeare
