I confined them to a room with a fire; and when they had a tendency to sweat, I made them lie a-bed, in order to promote that evacuation. This was the sure remedy, which being neglected, the disease was apt to run on for some weeks, with periodical flushings of the face, and sweats, which were but partially critical. This was my own cafe, who was sometimes obliged to travel on horseback over our moors, with some degree of the distemper upon me. But when people kept to their room, upon being first seized with the hoarseness and stuffing of the nose, they were scarce liable to any degree of fever. I promoted the sweat by such diet as I have mentioned, generally ordering some barley stewed with a few raisins, and sweetned with sugar j or water gruel, with a little white wine. For medicine, I gave a spoonful of the emulfa tmttljio e camphora. Ph. Ed. two or three times a day, as a cordial and diaphoretic. I lost nont of those I attended; but I knew several old people who died for want of proper care; and in particular from not keeping up the gentle moisture of the skin, when nature aimed at a crisis in that way. But, with good management, the very oldest with us recovered j of which I saw two remarkable instances; the first, in the cafe of Mr. Vilant, professor in this univerfity, now in the 92d year of his age and the other, in a person of 85, who had been. in a state of dotage for some years before. rV I hear that the sickness was more satal at Dundee, Perth, and Glasgow, places which 1 think have generally suffered most by Epidemic distempers.
