Labor is honorable, and the laborer worthy of his hire. But labor, no more than responsibility, capital, competition, and other factors of our commercial life, is exempt from the changes and hardships which progress entails. Labor-saving devices, while they made temporary confusion and suffering in the ranks of labor, lifted it from the level of barbarous occupations, increased general comfort, spread a veneer of civilization over all. In a little time, higher vocation opened to those bereft of employment, and things adjusted themselves, as they always do. Tyranny, whether of the classes or masses, is bad. The irresponsible tyranny which inheres in governmental ownership and labor unions, destroys the spirit and subverts the institutions of a Republican form of government The Divinity in Man. We know that this earth of ours is held in its orb by the attraction of other spheres. But what has held man to his destiny through ages of suffering, striving, oppression, error What has gradually transformed him from the savage and benighted condition of the brute to the being of refined sensibilities and gentle ins. . .
