In reply he would explain that the stoking on the Amethyst did not appear to have been quite as good as the stoking on the Topaze. The object of conducting the trials, of which Mr. Walker had had charge, had been to burn the Hon. C. A. amount of coal allowed by the Admiralty, and 5 per cent. less than arnons. gted amount was actually used. Mr. Walker had calculated that if the Amethyst had passed through her turbines the same amount of steam as the Topaze had through her triple-expansion engines, her speed would have reached just over 24 knots, as against just over 22 knots in the Topaze; and she would in that case have generated about 42 per cent. more power than the Topaze. Mr. Harding had cited other vessels of different classes, but it was very difficult to make any correct and reliable deductions without the full consideration of circumstances and details. The Cunard Commission had proceeded on sound practical and scientific lines, and had run the two most similar vessels they could obtain--the Brighton and the Arundel--at the same speeds, from one coast to the other and back, and had measured the water-consumption. It was difficult to deduce anything from the trials of the Virginian and Victorian, except by calculation, because there was no vessel of similar size and speed trading on the same line. The Caronia and the Carmania were exactly similar in every respect, with the exception that one had turbines and the other quadruple-expansion engines, and the results of the comparison were of very great interest and importance as bearing on the use of turbines in large v. . .
