First edition. Very Good +/very good +. This book tells one of the most dramatic sea stories of all time: the death of Hitler's proudest, deadliest battleship, at the moment when it might have turned the course of history. On May 18, 1941, teh Bismarck was in Gdynia Harbour, making ready to proceed to sea after a prolonged period of training in the Baltic. At 42,000 tons, she was the world's largest, most dangerous, most modern ship of war yet launched. The men on board the Bismarck were confident. There was no ship in the British navy that could face them in single combat; there was no large ship that could escape them. The author has recounted the events as they actually happened and in preparation he spent weeks with the records of the Admiralty, interviewed scores of persons who had had a hand in dispatching the Bismarck and has painstakingly reconstructed, minute by minute, the final fatal days of that proud battleship. The result is naval reporting of the highest order - clear, dramatic, fast-paced and full of suspense. C.S. Forester wrote the script for the film of the sinking of the Bismarck. Crispin Gill is Plymouth's best known author and historian and his books, including 'Plymouth - A New History' - see rja478314 (Vol I) and rja478214,rja424912,and rja34019 (all Vol II) for examples and 'Plymouth River' are considered classics. As this book is closely related to both of these titles,it was agreed that the same format be used as that of the other volumes,so that the three make a set,a matching trilogy. There can be few places in the world that have witnessed, within the compass of a few acres,so many of the world's most significant historical events.Sutton Harbour is the original port for the city of Plymouth.Since prehistoric times it has provided a sheltered anchorage and,in later centuries, the medieval port grew around it's shore. In Tudor times it became one of the principal harbours of the world, and from here Drake and Hawkins sailed against the Spanish Armada. In later years the 'Mayflower' embarked for the New World carrying the Pilgrim Fathers,to be followed by many famous vessels and their captains, setting out on voyages of discovery,in search of new lands, wealth and opportunity. While Devonport became the anchorage of the Royal Navy, Sutton Harbour remained at the heart of Plymouth's commercial shipping. In modern times (then 1997),the harbour has undergone startling changes and the transformation in the past decade is quite remarkable. The story of this unique corner of England is captured here in 'Sutton Harbour'. "In this fascinating and meticulously researched book, bestselling historian Arthur Herman sheds new light on two of the most universally recognizable icons of the twentieth century, and reveals how their forty-year rivalry sealed the fate of India and the British Empire. They were born worlds apart: Winston Churchill to Britains most glamorous aristocratic family, Mohandas Gandhi to a pious middle-class household in a provincial town in India. Yet Arthur Herman reveals how their lives and careers became intertwined as the twentieth century unfolded. Both men would go on to lead their nations through harrowing trials and two world wars--and become locked in a fierce contest of wills that would decide the fate of countries, continents, and ultimately an empire. Gandhi & Churchill reveals how both men were more alike than different, and yet became bitter enemies over the future of India, a land of 250 million people with 147 languages and dialects and 15 distinct religions--the jewel in the crown of Britains overseas empire for 200 years. Over the course of a long career, Churchill would do whatever was necessary to ensure that India remain British--including a fateful redrawing of the entire map of the Middle East and even risking his alliance with the United States during World War Two. Mohandas Gandhi, by contrast, would dedicate his life to India's liberation, defy death and imprisonment, and create an entirely new kind of political movement: satyagraha, or civil disobedience. His campaigns of nonviolence in defiance of Churchill and the British, including his famous Salt March, would become the blueprint not only for the independence of India but for the civil rights movement in the U.S. and struggles for freedom across the world. Now master storyteller Arthur Herman cuts through the legends and myths about these two powerful, charismatic figures and reveals their flaws as well as their strengths. The result is a sweeping epic of empire and insurrection, war and political intrigue, with a fascinating supporting cast, including General Kitchener, Rabindranath Tagore, Franklin Roosevelt, Lord Mountbatten, and Mohammed Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan. It is also a brilliant narrative parable of two men whose great successes were always haunted by personal failure, and whose final moments of triumph were overshadowed by the loss of what they held most dear. / Arthur Herman is the bestselling author of How the Scots Invented the Modern World, which has sold over 350,000 copies worldwide, and To Rule the Waves: How the British Navy Shaped the Modern World, which was nominated for the prestigious Mountbatten Prize in 2005. He is a former professor of history at Georgetown University, Catholic University, and the Smithsonians Campus on the Mall." - Publisher.. 1st. Hardcover. Very Good/Fine. 8vo. Nautilus tells the dramatic story of the conquest of inner space from the eccentric pioneers of the late nineteenth century to the supercraft of the modern world. It also tells of the dramatic race between the two superpowers to build the most powerful nuclear submarine fleet. Published to accompany the the television series. 'Nautilus' tells the story of the submarine, a vessel which revolutionized naval warfare in the course of 50 years, and the men who designed them and worked on them. In their short history submarines and submersible craft have played a decisive role in two world wars and today they roam the oceans, bearers of nuclear arsenals, ready to surface anywhere and strike any target. The book starts with the dramatic story of how Russian scientists and naval officers set about the task of constructing a nuclear submarine from scratch and with little knowledge of advances in nuclear physics in the rest of the world. The story then goes back to the days of the early pioneers, and follows rivalries and developments up to the First World War. During the war, submarines went into conflict for the first time. The German U Boat commanders became heroes at home as they roamed the seas, sinking hundreds of thousands of tons of British shipping. After the war miniature underwater craft, used for commando raids and suicide missions, were developed. In the Second World War we follow the fortunes of three subs - one British, one American and one German - and share the experiences of hunted and hunters, in a conflict in which for the first time submarine operations were integrated into overall naval strategy with devastating effect. These events are brought vividly to life through many eye-witness accounts from the men who fought and worked on the boats, as well as from designers and crew. A final chapter tells of the rivalry between the two superpowers - the USA and Russia - the building of the world's most powerful nuclear submarine fleet, and the extraordinary power of the American Admiral Rickover who dominated the American nuclear submarine programme for nearly 40 years, and was responsible for the world's first nuclear submarine, "Nautilus". There is a non-military side to the development of underwater vehicles too. For years man has descended into the oceans to observe and explore, discover and retrieve. The book tells the story of the men who took the first tentative steps into the deepest regions of the oceans. We see how oceanographic technology developed to create a new generation of robotic submersibles to explore and examine the furthest regions of outer space ., London: BBC, 1995 0563370432, 0, Great Britain: Osprey Publishing, 2010. Trade Paperback. This first of three books details the uniforms and organization of the forces that would make the greatest single contribution to Allied victory in Europe. By 1936, Marshall Tukhachevsky had built the world's most modern mechanized army, but by 1938 he was among the victims of Stalin's purges - which ensured that in 1941 the USSR would be wholly unfit to face the Wehrmacht. Illustrated with colour plates of Army, Air Force, Navy and NKVD personnel, this book covers the Soviet forces from the Winter War to the first months of the 'Great Patriotic War', when - despite catastrophic casualities - the Red Army finally fought the Germans to a halt at the gates of Moscow and Leningrad. AUSTRALIAN MILITARYIn 1939, Ray Parkin was serving on the Australian light cruiser HMAS Perth. At first glance he looked every inch the archetypal petty officer that he was - tough, practical and a model of naval discipline. Yet Ray was no ordinary sailor. Despite a lack of formal education, he had the soul of an artist and a philosopher's enquiring mind.As HMAS Perth was embroiled in war - in the Mediterranean and then in South-East Asia - Ray became both a witness and a chronicler of the conflict through his meticulous diaries and his minutely observed watercolours and sketches. When Perth was sunk off the coast of Java, Ray was one of the survivors. After a valiant attempt to sail back to Australia in a lifeboat, he surrendered and spent the rest of the war as a prisoner of the Japanese, first building the Thai-Burma Railway and then working as a slave labourer in a Japanese coalmine. The horrors and privations of those years saw some of his most memorable artwork - documenting both the beauty of the natural world and the savageries and humiliations of the POW ordeal. They were also years that saw the founding of lifelong friendships with fellow prisoners Edward 'Weary' Dunlop and Laurens van der Post. Ray's experiences gave him the material for the three seminal books he would publish after the war: Out of the Smoke, Into the Smother and The Sword and the Blossom.Ray died in 2005, acclaimed not only for his art and his wartime trilogy, but also for his prize-winning masterpiece H.M. Bark Endeavour, an extraordinary evocation of Captain Cook's ship and its voyage up the east coast of Australia in 1770.This remarkable biography, illustrated by 100 paintings and sketches, is the first full and comprehensive account of Ray's life and wartime experiences. Using extensive interviews with Ray himself, as well as his letters, diaries and unpublished memoirs, Pattie Wright has written a book that is powerful, moving and compelling. xvi, 654 p., [[48] p. of plates : ill. Fast shipping in a secure book box mailer with tracking. The twentieth century was preeminently an age of warring states and collapsing empires. Industrialism brought not peace but the sword. And the tip of that sword was sea power. In Power at Sea, Lisle A. Rose gives us an unprecedented narrative assessment of modern sea power, how it emerged from the Age of Fighting Sail, how it was employed in war and peace, and how it has shaped the life of the human community over the past century and a quarter. In this first volume, Rose recalls the early twentieth-century world of emerging, predatory industrial nations engaging in the last major scramble for global markets and empire. In such times, an imposing war fleet was essential to both national security and international prestige. Battleship navies became pawns of power politics, and between 1890 and 1914 four of them--Britain's Royal Navy, the Imperial German Navy, the Japanese Navy, and the U.S. Navy--set the tone and rhythm of international life. Employing a global canvas, Rose portrays the increasingly frantic naval race between Britain and Germany that did so much to bring about the First World War; he takes us aboard America's Great White Fleet as it circumnavigated the world between 1907 and 1909, leaving in its wake both goodwill and jealousy; he details Japan's growing naval and military power and the hunger for unlimited expansion that resulted. Important naval battles were fought in those days of ostensible peace, and Rose brings to life the encounters of still young and relatively small industrial fighting fleets at Manila Bay and Tsushima. He also takes us into the huge naval factories where the engines of war were forged. He invites us aboard the imperial battleships and battle cruisers, exploring the dramatically divided worlds of the officers' lordly wardroom with its clublike atmosphere and the often foul and fetid enlisted men's quarters. The Age of Navalism climaxed in the epic First World War Battle of Jutland, in which massive guns and maneuvering dreadnoughts determined that Imperial Germany would become the latest in a line of ambitious naval powers that failed to shake Britannia's rule of the waves. Germany's subsequent use of a revolutionary new strategy, unrestricted submarine warfare, nearly brought Britain to its knees, reduced the level of naval combat to barbarism, and brought the United States into the war with its own substantial navy, ultimately turning the tide of battle. Focusing as much on social issues and technological advances as on combat, Power at Sea: The Age of Navalism tells a compelling story of newfound power that is fascinating in its own right. Yet, it is merely a prologue to more startling accounts contained in the author's succeeding volumes., University of Missouri, 2006, 6<
