Dimensions: 8.4in. x 5.5in. x 1.0in.The Military History of the Soviet Union brings together contributions from distinguished scholars to provide an introduction to the history of all the Soviet armed forces from 1917 to 1991. Its sixteen chapters cover the Bolsheviks survival at the end of the First World War; the struggles against the White Armies and the Poles; the Leninist, Trotskyite, and Stalinist reconstructions that created the Red Army, the Red Air Force, the Five-Year Plans; and the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, a victory that vastly overshadowed dismal adventures in Spain and Finland. Robin Higham and Frederick W. Kagan also highlight the many facets of the USSRs strategy as a superpower in the long Cold War, including the rise of the Soviet Navy after the great Patriotic War, the disaster in Afghanistan, and the collapse of the Soviet Union. New in New jacket Book **NEW** The commands, units and leaders of the General SS are finally compiled into a single detailed reference book for both the historian and SS memorabilia collector. This complete volume begins with an explanation of the twelve administrative and command main offices involving the SS to include the development, components and functions of each, as well as their respective office chiefs. The following section explores the most powerful posts in the SS, the Higher SS and Police Leaders, along with the subordinate SS and Police Leaders found in occupied territories-both the commands and the individual holder of these posts are examined in depth. The SS Main Districts are covered next including all their various subordinate components, title changes, development, commanders and chiefs of staff. The more than forty SS Districts follow, detailed in a similar format. Examining the more than one-hundred and twenty-five SS Foot Regiments in the General SS, the names and ranks of the hundreds of commaners, as well as details of unit location changes, popular and honor titles as well as other data for each are within a separate chapter. Finally, the elite SS Riding Districts and Regiments are covered similarly. Career biographies are included for more than two hundred senior SS commanders, many of whom served portions of their career in the Waffen-SS, Polizei, SD and other facets of Himmler's commands. The biographical data for individuals alone adds vast detail to this fascinating topic. Along with more than 120 rare photos of SS senior ranking officers and seven maps, a detailed index allows referencing of individual commands or personalities. Mark Yerger is also the author of Riding East, The SS Cavalry Brigade in Poland and Russia 1939-1942; Images of the Waffen-SS, Chronicle of Germany's Elite Troops; and a biography of SS-Strumbannfuhrer Ernst August Krag (all three titles are available from Schiffer Publishing Ltd.).. Hardcover. NEW., Schiffer Pub Ltd, 1997, Westview Press. Paperback. New. Paperback. 304 pages. Dimensions: 9.0in. x 6.0in. x 0.9in.Written in the spirit of comparative and historical analysis, this book addresses the relationship between the center and its provincesan important issue in any societyusing Russia as a case study. The authors investigate the historical stages of Russias past with a special focus on the postcommunist era, a time when the movement toward regional autonomy (regionalization) is extremely important as a molder of political and economic life. In addition, the book shows how historical traditions, on the one hand, and the new market economy and democratization, on the other, will shape the relationship between the center and provinces in the coming decades. Shlapentokh, Levita, and Loiberg direct their attention not only to factors which shape regionalization, but also to the effects of this process on many different facets of Russian life. They argue that regionalization in Russia, as well as in other countries, is a contradictory process that has both benefits and drawbacks for social and economic progress. The solid research foundation draws from a rich body of sources, including Russian periodicals, statistical yearbooks, work by Russian and Western authors, data gathered in nationwide surveys conducted specifically for this project, and insightful observations made by the authors during their numerous visits to various regions in Russia. Volume 1, 127 pages; Volume 2, 237 pages. 49. 95 softcover, 2 volumes in slipcase, 5-14 x 0-12, ISBN 978-3-86922-187-8 color photographs, maps, bibliography, index. The first volume is a photographic gallery of Pyongyang buildings divided into major architectural categories--urban planning, residential buildings, cultural venues, education and sport, hotelsdepartment stores, transport infrastructure, and monuments. Buildings exteriors are shown, with occasional photos of parts of interiors. Overall, the treatment is the gross architectural forms and styles--as limited as these are as constrained by the North Korean Communist ideology--not details of interior design, materials, individual artists, or features notable for artistic or other reasons. What is notable overall despite the broad-ranging perspective with the large number of buildings shown is the repetitiveness of architectural concept. Though categorized into major categories in terms of the buildings kind or function, the North Korean architecture is basically either functional (e. g. , apartment buildings, government buildings) or monumental (e. g. , statues, commemorative or symbolic structures). The concept juche discussed briefly in the second volume accounts for the architecture. The term meaning simply self-reliant has broader, significant historical and political connotations. In a 1991 work on architecture parts of which are excerpted, the North Korean leader Kim Jong-il (d. 2011) wrote, Juche architecture regards the masses aspirations and demands as the sole criterion for the evaluation of beauty. Although this is standard Communist ideology, for North Korean leaders since the end of World War II, juche was a principle intended to develop a distinctive national identity apart from Soviet Russia which had been Koreas ally in the War against Japan occupying the Korean peninsula. The photographs of the many buildings in Volume I have brief captions or annotations containing facts about construction or features (e. g. , capacity) or historical notes. Volume 2 contains illustrated essays on varied facets of the Pyongyang architecture. In this volume, one finds photographs of buildings under construction, photos of North Koreans in other social settings, pictures of leaders and government officials, and posters on the sides of urban buildings or monuments meant to work in conjunction with them in representing the strength of social unity, the relationship between leaders and the population, and other principles of the nations ideology. One of the chapters of the second volume is Learning from Pyongyang - On the Legibility of Spatial Production. The topics of urban architecture and Communist ideology are implicit or explicit in most of this volume essays. Use of the two-volume set as a travel guide is noted by the editor. He also notes that all visitors to North Korea are monitored continually by the authorities, not that this interferes with viewing the architecture. But even if one does not plan travel to North Korea, the set works as a unique informative illustrated study of the architecture of this infamous, closed society. On this subject, it is encyclopedic. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED.., London - Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, 1881, Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. Hardcover. New. Hardcover. 208 pages. Dimensions: 9.0in. x 6.2in. x 1.0in.Belarus is one of the least studied European states to emerge from the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. In fact, few Western specialists paid much attention to its affairs during the Soviet era. Nevertheless, Belarus constitutes an important and sensitive border region between Russia and the western part of the continent. In Postcommunist Belarus, a stellar group of contributors examines the issues and the search for identity that Belarus has confronted in the period leading up to and following independence. The country is run in an authoritarian fashion by President Alexander Lukashenko and many observers, both inside and outside Belarus, would use the term dictatorship to describe his rule. Belarusian authorities prefer to emphasize the strong support of the people for the president and his cautious approach to economic reform. It seems unlikely that the country can hold out permanently against the wider pressures of democratization and economic reform that are transforming its neighbors. The countrys situation offers political scientists many facets for comparison with established models. Belarus is grappling with challenges that are conceptual and psychological as much as they are political, economic, and social. Through new research, the contributors to Postcommunist Belarus offer an important, coherent, and comparative perspective on this little-known country. This item ships from multiple locations. R. and the United States without disturbing the basic balance of power in Europe established after the Second World War. Then came the collapse of the Warsaw Pact and the vast democratic revolution that swept the Soviet empire, creating a power vacuum east of Berlin. Could such an upheaval have been a natural and logical extension of the course of reform that Gorbachev began plotting in 1985 Gorbachevs Revolution argues persuasively that the end of Communism was never the goal of the Soviet leader but rather the unintended result of an intense and many-faceted struggle for power. Anthony DAgostino demonstrates that the pervasive image of stable in-system reform in fact ignored evidence from history. Succession struggles in the U. S. S. R. were generally wars of ideas in which the victors got their way by challenging their opponents interpretations of the past. Through political memoirs, newspaper accounts, and historical documents, Gorbachevs Revolution demonstrates once again that revolutionaries change the world not only according to their own designs but also according to the worlds designs on them.
