New York. 1971. April 1971. Hill & Wang. 1st American Edition. Very Good In Worn Dustjacket. ISBN:0809050781. 231 pages. hardcover. Jacket design by Bill Tinker. FROM THE PUBLISHER - During the 1930s, B. Traven wrote an epic of the birth of the Mexican revolution in what have become known as the Jungle Novels. GOVERNMENT, one of the six novels that comprise the series, is published here for the first time in the United States. It is the second of the Jungle Novels published b Hill and Wang. GOVERNMENT depicts the political corruption that infected even the smallest villages in Mexico before the revolution. It introduces the agent Don Gabriel who supplies labor for the monterias (mahogany forests) where a third, in some monterias half, of the peons are dead within the year and have to be replaced; so business is never slack. The action centers on two Indian villages. The simple dignity of the illiterate Indians is contrasted with the cynicism and corruption of the ladino politicians and petty bureaucrats who live on money extorted from the Indian peons. The novel reaches a moving climax in a clash between two cultures, as ten thousand Indians gather in the square of a village and defy the efforts of the Mexican government to change their ancient custom of electing a new leader each year. B. Travens will, written on March 4, 1969, three weeks before his death in Mexico City, states that Traven Torsvan Croves was his real name, that he born in Chicago, Illinois on May 3, 1890, the son of Burton Torsvan and Dorothy Croves, and that he had used as noms de plume B. Traven and Hal Croves. While many of the facts of Travens life are still uncertain, it is known that he spent his youth in Germany, where he was an itinerant actor and later a revolutionary journalist known as Ret Marut who edited a radical anti-war magazine. After World War I he was a leader of the abortive revolution in Bavaria. He was sentenced to death, but escaped at the last minute. After a stint as seaman on tramp steamers, he jumped ship at Tampico, Mexico, in the early 20s, settled in Mexico, and began recording his experiences in novels. Traven produced a considerable body of short and long fiction, some of which has yet to be published in the United States and most of which was originally published in Germany. His first book, THE DEATH SHIP, was brought out in 1926 by a German publisher; his best-known novel in the United States is THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE. By the 1960s, Traven, a septuagenarian living quietly in Mexico City could look back on a writing career that had seen his books published in over thirty countries and read by millions. But when he died in 1969 he was still an obscure figure in the country of his birth. inventory #10290 ISBN: 0809050781.<

In the 1930s B. Traven wrote an epic of the birth of the Mexican revolution in what have become known as the "Jungle Novels." Government is the first of the six novels that comprise the series. Depicting the political corruption that infected even the smallest villages in Mexico, the novel tells the story of Don Gabriel, a minor government functionary who has a virtual license to steal from the Indian village where he is secretary?except that the Indians have nothing to steal. By chance he finds an opportunity in the labor agent business, shanghaiing luckless Indians into debt-slavery so that he can ship them off to work in the great mahogany plantations owned by foreign capital. The novel reaches a moving climax in a clash of cultures between the simple dignity of the illiterate Indians and the cynicism and corruption of the politicians and petty bureaucrats. His work must be read."?New York Times Book Review. action and adventure, civics and citizenship, contemporary, fiction, genre fiction, literary, literature and fiction, political science, politics and government, politics and social sciences Politics & Social Sciences, Farrar, Straus & Giroux<
