Modern American Drama - neues Buch

Modern American drama has had a lean history in comparison to the other arts, gaining prominence in the early twentieth century. Eugene O'Neill launched its emergence, combining naturalism, expressionism, and Greek tragedy, and winning his first Pulitzer in 1920 with more to follow. After this innovator came Tennessee WIlliams and Arthur Miller. Williams found influences in Poe and Faulkner, great southern gothic writers, producing plays that often revealed a society that was deathly for outsiders and misfits. Two of his best-known works, one sensual, gritty and violent, the other softer, are A Streetcar Named Desire and The Glass Menagerie, respectively. Miller takes a different tack, emphasizing his characters' responsibility to themselves and one another. His Willy Loman is a prime figure of an American father and businessman trying to fight the capitalist system. Edward Albee became a key figure after these playwrights, with his work being closer to that of European absurdists, strakly portraying man's suffering and self-destructiveness. More contemporary figures such as David Mamet, August Wilson and Tony Kusner point theater in new directions still. Literature Literature eBook, Infobase Publishing
