In the Historia Laceiorum it is mentioned, as a rumour, that he died in the Holy Land, on the 7th kalend of October; but the year when this event happened, and the region where he was interred, are declared to be equally unknown. According to other, and perhaps more authentic, accounts, Henry de Laci and Abbot Alexander terminated their earthly career about the same time, towards the close of Henry II.'s reign, and after the completion of the Monastery, where their remains were appropriately deposited. T Before the death of the former, however, he gave his favourite Monks, in addition to the more substantial proofs of affectionate regard already noticed, a grant of half a mark of silver per annum, out of his estate at Clitheroe, to furnish a lamp which should be kept perpetually burning, night and day, before the great Altar of St. Mary at Kirkstall. He also granted them out of the same estate, a mark of silver per annum, to supply the Abbot with vestments; and ordered that his bailiffs should pay both sums punctually, and without deduction, on the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
