Khemiri, Jonas Hassen:

Montecore : The Silence of the Tiger - gebunden oder broschiert

2011, ISBN: 9780307270955

ID: 489246567

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 2011. It was translated into several languages and internationally acclaimed, but it was not translated into English. Montecore is his second novel and was awarded the PO Enquist Literary Prize in 2007 for the most promising young European writer, as well as the Sveriges Radio's Novel Prize for best Swedish novel of 2007. This novel also marks Khemiri's U.S. debut. Echoing his own background, this is the story of a young Swedish writer (also named Khemiri), the son of a Tunisian immigrant, who receives a letter from his estranged father's old friend, Kadir. Their sudden correspondence opens up a discovery process for the young author in learning who his father really is, reconciling his own view with the commentary by Kadir, "an effervescent storyteller with delightfully anarchic linguistic idiosyncrasies," (which the translator is said to have captured brilliantly). He is then spurred to write a story about coming of age as the son of an immigrant. In addition to addressing the serious issue of the clash of modern-day Swedish ideals of tolerance and diversity with the reality of racism and xenophobia, this story is also tender and amusing. A NY Times review states: "The novel is at its most exciting on the level of linguistic performance. A constantly changing creole, its voice shifts registers and references, revealing the substantial emotional gaps that open up in characters and cultures when they're remixed in this way . . . the novel is funny, ambitious and inventive. Also black rage and tragedy pulse beneath the fireworks." This is a nice clean review copy of this novel from an up-and-coming (and already arrived) young Swedish author. Laid in is a one-page publisher's announcement.. First American Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. Illus. by Chris Silas Neal (jacket design). 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall., Alfred A. Knopf, 2011

Jonas Hassen Khemiri:

Montecore - gebrauchtes Buch

ISBN: 0307270955

ID: 6408407

At the start of this dazzlingly inventive novel from Jonas Hassen Khemiri, Abbas, a world-famous photographer and estranged father to a young novelist-also named Jonas Hassen Khemiri-is standing on a luxurious rooftop terrace in New York City. He is surrounded by rock stars, intellectuals, and political luminaries gathered to toast his fiftieth birthday. And yet how did Abbas, a dirt-poor Tunisian orphan and Swedish ?migr?, come to enjoy such success?Jonas is fresh off the publication of his first novel when answers to this question come in the form of an unexpected e-mail from Kadir, a lifelong friend of Abbas and an effervescent storyteller with delightfully anarchic linguistic idiosyncrasies. The portrait Kadir paints of Abbas-from a voluntarily mute boy who suffers constant night terrors, to a soulful young charmer, to a Swedish immigrant and political exile-proves to be vastly different from Jonas's view of his father. As the two jagged versions reconcile in Kadir and Jonas's impassioned correspondence, we're given a portrayal of a man that is at once tender and feverishly imagined. With an arresting blend of humor and wit, Montecore marks the stateside arrival of an already acclaimed international novelist. Winner of the PO Enquist Literary Prize for accomplished European novelists under forty, Jonas Hassen Khemiri has created a world that is as heartbreaking as it is exhilarating. education and reference, genre fiction, historical, literary, literature and fiction Education & Reference, Knopf

[EAN: 9780307270955], Neubuch, [PU: Knopf], Brand New, Unread Copy in Perfect Condition. A+ Customer Service! Summary: "[ Montecore is] funny, ambitious, and inventive. Also black: rage and tragedy pulse beneath the fireworks&a potent chemical mix." - The New York Times Book Review "To those whose experience of Swedish fiction has been as bleak as Nordic winter, Montecore arrives as a sunny revelation. An exuberant account&the novel in fact challenges assumptions about Swedish identity&[A] rollicking tale." -Barnes & Noble " Montecore is brilliant. Like its title-an invented creolized noun equal parts Arabic, French, Swedish, Siegfried & Roy, and Dungeons & Dragons-Jonas Hassen Khemiri's novel is itself a thrillingly hybrid creature: an immigrant story, a coming-of-age tale, an epistolary epic, an indictment of Swedish racism and nationalism, a meditation on storytelling and translation. . .Above all, however, this is a beautiful novel, a bewitching novel, as funny as it is heartbreaking, as self-aware as it is self-effacing, and certainly the best book that I've read in a long time." -Rattawut Lapcharoensap, author of Sightseeing "[A] vibrant story of culture, class, and family history enlivened by Khemiris subtle wit and voice." - Publishers Weekly "Amusing and multilayered. . .Khemiri adds a distinctive and quirky voice-actually several of them-to contemporary literature." - Kirkus (starred)

He has been hailed as one of the greatest writers of his generation in Sweden, and now we have the first of his novels to be translated into English: a luminous mock-historical epic about a Tunisian immigrant in Sweden who may or may not be the author's own father. Papa is the superhero of "Montecore, " a world-famous photographer whom we meet on the first page, pacing up and down the terrace of his luxurious Manhattan loft. How, we might wonder, did a dirt-poor Tunisian orphan achieve such cosmic success? And how is it that Jonas doesn't know? The answers begin to form when Kadir, Papa's best friend from the old days, starts writing long letters to Jonas in Stockholm, telling him about his father's youth in Tunisia and how he became famous. Jonas writes back with memories of his own childhood with Papa in Sweden, and, gradually, their curious, passionate letters create two interlinked but jaggedly different faces of a vanished man. Witty, dazzlingly inventive, with a heartbreaking storyteller's gift, "Montecore" marks the debut in English of a blazing international talent.
