Dumbstruck - A Cultural History of Ventriloquism - gebunden oder broschiert

ISBN: 0198184336

[SR: 915185], Hardcover, [EAN: 9780198184331], OUP Oxford, OUP Oxford, Book, [PU: OUP Oxford], OUP Oxford, Why can none of us hear our own recorded voice without wincing? Why is the telephone still full of such spookiness and erotic possibility? Why does the metaphor of ventriloquism, the art of 'seeming to speak where one is not', speak so resonantly to our contemporary technological condition? These are the kind of questions which impel Steven Connor's wide-ranging, restlessly inquisitive history of ventriloquism and the disembodied voice. He tracks his subject from its first recorded beginnings in ancient Israel and Greece, through the fulminations of early Christian writers against the unholy (and, they believed, obscenely produced) practices of pagan divination, the aberrations of the voice in mysticism, witchcraft and possession, and the strange obsession with the vagrant figure of the ventriloquist, newly conceived as male rather than female, during the Enlightenment. He retrieves the stories of some of the most popular and versatile ventriloquists and polyphonists of the nineteenth century, and investigates the survival of ventriloquial delusions and desires in spiritualism and the 'vocalic uncanny' of technologies like telephone, radio, film, and internet. Learned but lucid, brimming with anecdote and insight, this is much more than an archaeology of one of the most regularly derided but tenaciously enduring of popular arts. It is also a series of virtuoso philosophical and psychological reflections on the problems and astonishments, the raptures and absurdities of the unhoused voice., 771730, Edwardian and Early 20th Century 1901-1913, 271343, Britain & Ireland, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 771732, Inter-war Period 1919-1938, 271343, Britain & Ireland, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 771758, Early 20th Century 1901-1913, 271480, Europe, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 771760, Inter-war Period 1919-1938, 271480, Europe, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 771766, Early 20th Century 1901-1913, 271565, North America, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 771768, Inter-war Period 1919-1938, 271565, North America, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 772162, Cultural History, 772188, Local & Urban History, 772192, London, 271405, Multicultural History, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 772050, 20th Century, 771724, Essays, Journals, Letters & True Accounts, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 772006, 1901-1913, 771718, World History, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 772010, Inter-war Period 1919-1938, 771718, World History, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 270447, Criticism & Theory, 270433, Film, 73, Music, Stage & Screen, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 513002, Comedy, 512986, Film Genres, 270433, Film, 73, Music, Stage & Screen, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 274080, Comedy & Stand-up, 270524, Performing Arts, 73, Music, Stage & Screen, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 270568, Puppetry, 270524, Performing Arts, 73, Music, Stage & Screen, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 515316, Stagecraft, 270524, Performing Arts, 73, Music, Stage & Screen, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 270485, Indoor Games, 270453, Hobbies & Games, 55, Sports, Hobbies & Games, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books

Ventriloquism, the art of "seeming to speak where one is not", speaks so resonantly to our contemporary technological condition. We now think nothing of hearing voices--our own and others'--propelled over intercoms, cellphones, and answering machines. Yet, why can none of us hear our own recorded voice without wincing? Why is the telephone still full of such spookiness and erotic possibility? And why does the magician's trick of speaking through a dummy entertain as well as disturb us? These are the kind of questions which impel Dumbstruck, Steven Connor's wide-ranging, relentlessly inquisitive history of ventriloquism and the disembodied voice. Connor follows his subject from its early beginnings in ancient Israel and Greece, through the outcries of early Christian writers against the unholy (and, they believed, obscenely produced) practices of pagan divination. Surprisingly, he finds that women like the sibyls of Delphi were the key voices in these male-dominated times. Connor then turns to the aberrations of the voice in mysticism, witchcraft and possession, and the strange cultural obsession with the vagrant figure of the ventriloquist, newly conceived as male rather than female, that flourished during the Enlightenment. He retells the stories of some of the most popular and versatile ventriloquists and polyphonists of the nineteenth century, and investigates the survival of ventriloquial delusions and desires in spiritualism and the 'vocalic uncanny' 20th century, arts music and photography, comedy, history, history and criticism, humor, humor and entertainment, modern (16th-21st centuries),movies, performing arts Movies, Oxford University Press
