Extrait: . . . to divide the State into eight compensation districts equalizing, as far as possible, population and hazardous employment. The next duty was to assign to these districts the referees who had been named by the Commissioner of Labor with the approval of the Governor. A review of the work of the Compensation Bureau would not be complete without paying a proper tribute to the spirit and intelligence displayed by these ten gentlemen thus appointed and assigned to their respective districts: W. B. Scott and George C. Klauder, of District No. 1, located in Philadelphia; Paul W. Houck, District No. 2, located in Pottsville; George W. Beemer, District No. 3, located in Scranton; E. K. Scott Smith, District No. 7, located in Warren; Thomas J. Dunn and L. E. Christley, District No. 8, located in Pittsburgh, Penna. INSTRUCTIONS TO REFEREES It was our duty and privilege early last December to say to the Referees: You have been called from various parts of this great State; your experiences in life have been different; the paths you have traveled home been widely divergent and therefore toe must expect that you look at subjects from different viewpoints. This is rightly so, for, in thus calling you to the performance of this duty we bring to the aid of this legislation the common experience and the common knowledge of this Commonwealth. This Board, however, is extremely anxious, and in this we voice the earnest desire of His Excellency the Governor, that you remember that this law is a law of every man, woman and child in the State of Pennsylvania;. . . Close by lay a shattered marble shaft which the angry winds had hurled from its pedestal and tall weeds and rank growth were blotting out its inscriptions. Decadence due to neglect was manifest everywhere in this ruined city of the dead. Facing the entrance of the cemetery from the south stands a plain marble shaft seven feet high which marks the grave of Joseph Rodman Drake. Whatever fitness there may have been in burying Drake in that particular spot, was lost in the neglect into which his grave was afterward permitted to fall. In 1891 the Brownson Literary Union in appreciation of his genius restored the monument to a semblance of its former neatness. The inscription reads: Sacred to the Memory of Joseph R. Drake, M. D. who died Sept. 21st 1820 Aged 25 Years None knew him but to love him, Nor named him but to praise. Renovated By The Brownson Literary Union July 25, 1891. The little cemetery is also the final resting place of veterans of the various Colonial wars and of Continental soldiers, members of the Hunt, Leggett, Willett and allied families. Directly opposite the Hunt burying ground is a small en Slave Burying Ground closure in which the slaves of early residents were interred. It is also said that Bill, the negro pilot of the wrecked British frigate Hussar, was buried there: After the voice of shrieking winds And tossing of the angry deep, In kind embrace of Mdther Earth Resting, like child in quiet sleep. CHAPTER XI THE ROMANCE OF BESSIE WARREN The Daughter of Old Simon, the Landlord of the Kings Arms--Her Love for the Dashing Officer Who Was Branded a British Spy--The Maiden Who Did. . . Dimensions: 7.7in. x 5.1in. x 0.4in.Already tested in performance on the stage, this translation shows for the first time in English the striking interplay of voices in Euripides Suppliant Women. Torn between the mothers lament over the dead and proud civic eulogy, between calls for a just war and grief for the fallen, the play captures with unremitting force the competing poles of the human psyche. The translators, Rosanna Warren and Stephen Scully, extenuate the contrasting tonalities in counterpoint of female lament and male reasoned discourse in this play where the silent dead hold, finally, centre stage.
