New York:: Arno Press. 1981. hardcover. Series: The Development of Science, Sources for the History of. Science. 8vo. xii, 304; 183 pp. 2 volumes in 1. Beige/tan cloth. stamped in red. Fine.. Reprinting of two noted works about Virchow. Ackerknecht’s biography dates from 1953. Ackerknecht, born in Poland, came to the US due to WWII, became the first Chair in the history of medicine at the University of Wisconsin; the second such position in the United States. Julius Schwalbe (1863-1930) completed the “Virchow-Bibliograpie…”, first printed in 1901, with contributions from five distinguished associate editors: Becher, Pagel, Strauch Weyl and Schwalbe. Lelland J. Rather described the work as “monumental.” “The work is divided into two parts. The first lists in chronological order Virchow’s publications in pathology, parasitology, epidemiology, social medicine, public health and sanitation, medical history and philosophy, forensic medicine, military medicine, school hygiene, and medical therapy. Included also are a few publications of a more general character, such as those on Goethe as a natural scientist and on Darwinism and evolution. The second part lists Virchow’s publications in anthropology, ethnology, and archeology. Schwalbe’s two lists are almost definitive. Virchow survived for another eleven months after their completion, but his career came to a rather abrupt end on a rainy night in Berlin on January 4, 1902, when he slipped and fell after dismounting from a streetcar…” – See: Lelland J. Rather, Commentary on the Medical Writings of Rudolf Virchow: Based on Schwalbe’s ... Norman Publishing, 1990, p. iv. ISBN: 0405138326 . 1, Arno Press, 1981, New York: Pella Publishing Company, 2002. New (Can be ordered on request to be delivered direct from publisher/distributor.) Modern Greek Research Series 11. This collection presents a broad and compelling overview of some of the most important work conducted in the field of Greek American Studies in the last 20 years. It aims at providing the interested reader with the necessary background from which to evaluate past and current developments in the Greek American community. Further, it is intended for use in study groups, colleges and universities. Any serious scholarly examination of ethnic groups, particularly the Greeks in the United States, will benefit from the works in this compilation. The volume is divided into three parts: History and Politics, Society and Culture, and Psychology. One of the unique features of this compilation is the balance provided by the inclusion of psychological studies. Thus, the historical, political and social investigations are fortified with the personal. Psychology takes up where social investigations leave off. Each part combines wide and in-depth analysis. Lastly, the chapters of this edited volume contain an implicit plea for an appreciation of the complexity, the agony and the dreams realized and deferred of the Greeks in the United States. As the popularity of the comic film My Big Fat Greek Wedding threatens to return the community to Dionysian stereotypes, the publication of this edited volume is a corrective step in the Apollonian direction. As the Greek communities make the transition to the 21st century, this book rewards readers with insightful and intimate studies that can provide an important context for further meaningful explorations. Calling someone a fascist is the fastest way to shut them up, defining their views as beyond the political pale. But who are the real fascists in our midst Liberal Fascism offers a startling new perspective on the theories and practices that define fascist politics. Replacing conveniently manufactured myths with surprising and enlightening research, Jonah Goldberg reminds us that the original fascists were really on the left and that liberals from Woodrow Wilson to Franklin Roosevelt to Hillary Clinton have advocated policies and principles remarkably similar to those of Hitlers National Socialism and Mussolinis Fascism. Contrary to what most people think, the Nazis were ardent socialists (hence the term National Socialism). They believed in free health care and guaranteed jobs. They confiscated inherited wealth and spent vast sums on public education. They purged the church from public policy, promoted a new form of pagan spirituality, and inserted the authority of the state into every nook and cranny of daily life. The Nazis declared war on smoking and supported abortion, euthanasia, and gun control. They loathed the free market, provided generous pensions for the elderly, and maintained a strict racial quota system in their universitieswhere campus speech codes were all the rage. The Nazis led the world in organic farming and alternative medicine. Hitler was a strict vegetarian, and Himmler was an animal rights activist. Do these striking parallels mean that todays liberals are genocidal maniacs, intent on conquering the world and imposing a new racial order Not at all. Yet it is hard to deny that modern progressivism and classical fascism shared the same intellectual roots. We often forget, for example, that Mussolini and Hitler had many admirers in the United States. W. E. B. Du Bois was inspired by Hitlers Germany, and Irving Berlin praised Mussolini in song. Many fascist tenets were espoused by American progressives like John Dewey and Woodrow Wilson, and FDR incorporated fascist policies in the New Deal. Fascism was an international movement that appeared in different forms in different countries, depending on the vagaries of national culture and temperament. In Germany, fascism appeared as genocidal racist nationalism. In America, it took a friendlier, more liberal form. The modern heirs of this friendly fascist tradition include the New York Times, the Democratic Party, the Ivy League professoriate, and the liberals of Hollywood. The quintessential Liberal Fascist isnt an SS storm trooper; it is a female grade-school teacher with an education degree from Brown or Swarthmore. These assertions may sound strange to modern ears, but that is because we have forgotten what fascism is. In this angry, funny, smart, contentious book, Jonah Goldberg turns our preconceptions inside out and shows us the true meaning of Liberal Fascism. This item ships from multiple locations.
