Book. TORQUAY and PAIGNTON have changed dramatically over the past two centuries. In 1793 the Revd John Swete was charmed by the lush, peaceful countryside of this part of the South Devon coast, but within decades these ancient settlements and,to a lesser extent, Brixham had been developed into what became known as the English Riviera. This important new book, while briefly reviewing the earlier history, describes and explains that transformation in fascinating detail. It is also the story of the three families who, despite their uneasy relationship with each other, were largely responsible for the emergence of Torbay as a celebrated and elegant Victorian resort. Patronised by English and European royalty and aristocracy, and distinguished Victorians, from Disraeli to Dickens and Wilde,it also attracted wealthy invalids who came to enjoy the sea air.Although turnpike roads were opening up the area to coaches, many still came by sea,and the Palks, the largest landowners, sank a vast sum of money into enlarging Torquay's dilapidated harbour, thus creating the nucleus of the resort.William Kitson, banker, solicitor and agent for the Palks, was the driving force behind much of the development, but the Carys of Torre Abbey and the Malocks of Cockington Court both allowed much building on their land. Paignton was shaped by the energy of Arthur Hyde Dendy, and Isaac Merritt Singer and his son, Paris. The book explores all aspects of Torbay's Victorian society and the changes wrought by the 20th century. During the inter-war years small hotels proliferated, attracting a different type of visitor, while Paignton saw the introduction of cheap seaside holidays.Surprisingly active in WW2,the famous old resorts struggled to find a place in the post-war world. That they have done so is due to a new generation of enterprising men and women. What is intriguing is that each town has kept its own character,as the author reveals in this readable and very welcome new account of their past. The Hope Diamond - the largest and most beautiful blue diamond ever found - has inspired centuries of legends and lies, great superstition and fierce passion.French kings and stunning heiresses have worn it next to their hearts.Reckless aristocrats have let it slip through their fingers.Flaunted, hidden, stolen and cursed, the Hope Diamond still tantalises and inspires all who lay eyes on it.Now in 'Hope: Adventures of a Diamond',Marian Fowler tells the story of this mythical gem and the extraordinary men and women who have owned and lost it.It is a tale that begins more than a billion years ago in the mountains of India where the gem was forged of the basest materials.Unearthed sometime before the birth of Christ,it was more than twice its present size and wondrously shaped. For centuries the immense blue stone, revered as a divine gift, probably served as the unwinking eye in the statue of a Hindu god. With the arrival of the Europeans, the diamond was snatched from the realm of the mystical and thrust into the worlds of materialism and political symbolism.Marian Fowler brilliantly tells the story of how the French merchant Jean-Baptists Tavernier acquired the sacred diamond in India and sold it to the one monarch who could - and would - pay for it,King Louis XIV of France.Cut and polished to half its original size, the diamond remained in the possession of the house of Bourbon, passed down from Louis to Louis, until stolen in an almost farcical French Revolution robbery. Some thirty years later, the diamond came into the possession of Philip Hope, the heir to a vast international banking empire who gave it the name it has carried ever since. But the heady days in the sumptuous London town-houses and country estates of the Hope family were brief, and by the 20thC,the Hope Diamond had become the object of unseemly marital wrangling and social climbing of American millionaires until diamond master Harry Winston came to its rescue.Donating it to the Smithsonian Institution,he ensured the Hope was finally safe and accessible to all who wanted to admire it. A sweeping saga peopled with the world's most beautiful women and most unprincipled men,'Hope: Adventures of a Diamond' is at once a page-turning thriller and a glittering social history of the astonishing characters who craved - and could afford - such a gem. Dazzling and delicious, this is a book truly worthy of its flawless, priceless subject.
