"The Communist Manifesto," Marx and Engels's revolutionary summons to the working classes, is one of the most important and influential political theories ever formulated. After four years of collaboration, the authors produced this incisive declaration of their idea of Communism, in which they envisage a society without classes, private property or a state. They argue that increasing exploitation of industrial workers will eventually lead to a revolution in which Capitalism is overthrown. This vision provided the theoretical basis of political systems in Russia, China, Cuba and Eastern Europe, affecting the lives of millions. "The Communist Manifesto" still remains a landmark text: a work that continues to influence and provoke debate on capitalism and class. For more than sixty-five years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,500 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust theseries to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators." Biographical Note: Karl Marx was born in Trier, Germany and studied law at Bonn and Berlin. In 1848, with Freidrich Engels, he finalized "The Communist Manifesto." He settled in London, where he studied economics and wrote the first volume of his major work, "Das Kapital"(1867, two further volumes were added in 1884 and 1894). He is buried in Highgate Cemetery, London. Friedrich Engelswas born in Westphalia in 1820, the son of a textile manufacturer. After military training in Berlin, Engels already a convert to communism, went to Manchester in 1842 to represent the family firm. A relationship with a mill-hand, Mary Bums, and friendship with local Owenites and Chartists helped to inspire his famous early work, "The Condition of the Working Class" in England in 1844. His collaboration with Marx began in 1844 and in 1847 he composed the first drafts of the "Communist Manifesto." After playing an active part in the German revolutions, Engels returned to work in Manchester until 1870, when he moved to London. He not only helped Marx financially, but reinforced their shared position through his own expositions of the new theory. After Marx s death, he prepared the unfinished volumes of Capital for publication. He died in London in 1895. Gareth Stedman Jones is Professor of Political Science in the History Faculty of Cambridge University and a Fellow of King's College, Cambridge. He is also a Director of the Centre of History and Economics at Cambridge. His publications include "Outcast London" and "Languages of Class." Size: 140mm - 180mm. 418 pages. Synopsis Sidney Sheldon has lived a life filled with fortitude and self-doubt, reversal and triumph--from scathing Broadway reviews to three shows at once and a Tony Award®, from luckless knocks on movie studio doors to screenwriting successes for Easter Parade and Annie Get Your Gun--from anxiously watching his first novel hit bookstores to being hailed as the world's most translated author by The Guinness Book of Records. In THE OTHER SIDE OF ME, Sheldon pulls no punches. He talks candidly about growing up in Depression-era Chicago, his family's poverty, and the onset of mood swings, later diagnosed as manic depression, that would haunt him throughout his life. He recalls how he boldly maneuvered his way into show business as a self-proclaimed songwriter...how, as a first-time nominee, he accepted the Oscar® for Best Original Screenplay for The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer without having prepared a speech...how he directed Cary Grant and comforted Judy Garland in Hollywood, how he worked with TV icons Barbara Eden, Patty Duke, and Larry Hagman. And, in frank and moving chapters, Sheldon reveals, for the first time, his private self: his profound personal losses and his search for happiness. Every reader knows that a Sidney Sheldon novel is a guaranteed page-turner. His real-life story is just as compelling. Packed with choice anecdotes about everyone from Frank Sinatra to Irving Berlin to Marilyn Monroe, as well as hilarious asides from pal Groucho Marx, THE OTHER SIDE OF ME is filled with highs and lows, twists and turns, and is every bit as riveting as any blockbuster Sheldon has ever written. Finally, the world's master storyteller shares his greatest tale---his own! . First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall., Warner Books, 2005, Aakar Books, 2011. First edition. Softcover. New. Praised for its ‘clear-headedness and common sense’ (London Review of Books), this book is an introduction to the uses made of anthropology by Marx and Engels, and the uses made of Marxism by anthropologists. Maurice Bloch begins by using our present knowledge to evaluate the writings of Marx and Engels on primitive societies. He goes on to discuss the anthropological theories of the immediate successors to Marx and Engels, and assesses the significance of the fact that the only work available to them was Engels’s The Origin of Private Property, the Family and the State. He then examines the gradual reintroduction of Marxist concepts in American, British, and French anthropology. He relates how anthropologists have turned away from the theories of primitive societies developed by Marx and Engels, and have instead explained the workings of pre-capitalist societies in the light of Marxist theories of Capitalism. Synopsis Ellen Israel Rosen presents a compelling portrait of married women who work on New England's assembly lines while they also maintain their homes and marriages. With skill and sympathy, she documents the reasons these women work; their experiences on the job, in the union, and at home; the sources of their job satisfaction; and their management of the "double day." The major issue for this segment of the labor force, Rosen suggests, is not whether to work, but the availability and quality of jobs. Rosen argues that deindustrialization plant closings and job displacement confronts blue-collar women factory workers with a "bitter choice" between work at lower and lower wages or no work at all. Drawing on quantitative and qualitative data from interviews with more than two hundred such women factory workers, Rosen traces the ways in which women who do "unskilled" factory work have gained in self-esteem as well as financial stability from holding paid jobs. Throughout, Rosen explores the relationship between public work experiences and private family life. She analyzes the dynamics of two-paycheck, working class families, clarifies relationships between class and gender, and explores the impact of patriarchy and capitalism on working class women. At the same time Rosen places women's job loss within the broader economic context of global industrial transformations, demonstrating how international capital shifts to cheaper labor in developing countries, as well as technological progress, are changing the shape of the entire American labor force and are beginning to undermine the material and symbolic gains of the American female factory worker, the promise of marketequality, and progressive working conditions. "This book is a significant contribution to our understanding of women's work and family lives, but it is also a valuable look at the consequences of deindustrialization in America for workers, their families, and their communities."Myra Marx Ferree, American Journal of Sociology . Trade Paperback. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall., Univ of Chicago Pr, 1990, Sidgwick & Jackson, 1986. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. h/b 210 pages, condition is very good. Here are portraits of three very different Victorian women, all of whom married men of exceptional talent, energy and genius. To be the wife of such frenetic, explosive characters as David Livingstone, Karl Marx or Charles Darwin, especially at this period in history demanded rare qualities. Yet the late twentieth-century view of these women is perhaps best summed up in the frequently heard comment: 'I didn't know he had a wife.' The mid-nineteenth century was a time of unprecedented movement and upheaval. The revolutions of 1848 set Europe ablaze and sent swarms of political disidents to seek freedom outside their homelands. Britain and her Empire were ruled by a young Queen Victoria, inspired by her enterprising, vigorous consort, Albert; it was a climate in which invention and discovery were encouraged. Men were creating new frontiers, both geographically and intellectually, and where they went their wives and families accompanied them. The misionary-explorer Livingstone was penetrating the dark interior of Africa. Max, a refugee from his native Germany, was opening up new dimensions in politics, while Darwin's scientific theories were rocking the foundations of religious belief. In each case they were assisted beyond measure by their wives, all greatly loved and all the daughters of the men whom they most admired. Constant child-bearing, illness and bereavement haunted them, and for Mary Livingstone and Jenny Marx, continually uprooted and set down in alien surroundings, physical danger, privation and poverty were all too familiar. Without those strong, supportive, enduring women, who could provide domesticity and companionship in the heart of the jungle, a tranquil oasis in the squalid slums of Soho, consolation amid tragedy, would these men have achieved so much? Edna Healey, herself the wife of a major political figure, look at nineteenth-century history from a new viewpoint, and describes these fascinating partnerships with insight and sensitivity., Sidgwick & Jackson, 1986, Houghton Mifflin, Boston, MA, 1985. The volume also examines ancient religions and philosophies that the Chinese, with their unique flexibility, have interwoven with the doctrines of Marx and Mao. After Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin (18701924) is the man most associated with communism and its influence and reach around the world. Lenin was the leader of the communist Bolshevik party during the October 1917 revolution in Russia, and he subsequently headed the Soviet state until 1924, bringing stability to the region and establishing a socialist economic and political system. In Lenin, Lars T. Lih presents a striking new interpretation of Lenins political beliefs and strategies. Until now, Lenin has been portrayed as a pessimist with a dismissive view of the revolutionary potential of the workers. However, Lih reveals that underneath the sharp polemics, Lenin was actually a romantic enthusiast rather than a sour pragmatist, one who imposed meaning on the whirlwind of events going on around him. This concise and unique biography is based on wide-ranging new research that puts Lenin into the context both of Russian society and of the international socialist movement of the early twentieth century. It also sets the development of Lenins political outlook firmly within the framework of his family background and private life. In addition, the books images, which are taken from contemporary photographs, posters, and drawings, illustrate the features of Lenins world and time. A vivid, non-ideological portrait, Lenin is an essential look at one of the key figures of modern history. This item ships from multiple locations. "Half of the world's population lives under political systems that claim their inspiration from Karl Marx. For someone so influential, it is surprising that so little has been known of his private life, that his ideas were so misunderstood that they could plausibly be reduced to a caricature both by his opponents and his defenders. David McLellan's balanced and comprehensive biography presents for the first time a full picture of Marx - in his private life, as a political activist, and as a thinker. The fascinating story of Marx's marriage and family life amid extraordinary privations, his activities in the Communist League and the First International, and the full extent and subtlety of his thought as it developed." . Manufacture may be regarded as a machine which is composed of men. Hence too, concludes Marx, since the mind which directs (i. e. the capitalists), and the arm which blindly carries out the work (i. e. the labourers), are separated and antagonistic, the result is that the productive power of labour in society becomes the productive power in the interests of the capitalist (i. e. the private speculator). In the case of industry carried on with the help of machinery, which in a great number of cases becomes USE OF MACHINERY INCREASING TOIL. 179 a simple substitute for manual labour, the danger exists of dispensing altogether with muscular strength, and employing the labour of the weak, the immature, and those of tender age, i. e. women and children. By these the price of wages is depressed, and the profit arising from underpaid labour flows into the pockets of the employers. Marx quotes from official sources the most astounding facts, showing the amount of misery and mortality and destruction of the family life resulting from this fact. The mortality of children is greatest where women are employed in factory labour, and where the children, from want of proper food and the use of opiates, and in some cases even intentional starvation and drugging, become the victims of unnatural parents. On the other hand, the same official reports show how, in agricultural districts, where but a very small number of women are employed, the mortality of children is less in proportion. It will be in fact a blessing, says one of the factory inspectors, R. Baker, in his official report, for the manufacturing districts of England, to forbid every married woman who has a family to work in a factory. The. . . Focusing as much on Marxs private life as on his public persona and work, this classic biography looks in detail at his relationship with his mother and father, wife and friends, and includes generous quotations from a wide range of correspondence in addition to virtually every photograph in existence of Marx and his closest associates. Blumenberg examines Marxs early writing as a schoolboy and his romantic poetry whilst a student, as well as his exchanges with close friend and collaborator Frederick Engels. In these pages are moving accounts of the privations of Marxs poverty-stricken life in London and the tragedies which struck his family, as well as discussions of his intellectual development and political activity. Including virtually every photograph in existence of Marx and his closest associates, and focusing as much on his private life as on his public persona and work, Werner Blumenbergs biography provides an intimate portrait of the making of a complex intellectual the New Yorker dubbed the next most influential thinker. Dimensions: 9.5in. x 6.6in. x 2.0in.Karl Marx is a magisterial and defining biography that vividly explores not only the man himself but also the revolutionary times in which he lived. Between his birth in 1818 and his death sixty-five years later, Karl Marx became one of Western civilizations most influential political philosophers. Two centuries on, he is still revered as a prophet of the modern world, yet he is also blamed for the darkest atrocities of modern times. But no matter in what light he is cast, the short, but broad-shouldered, bearded Marx remainsas a human beingdistorted on a Procrustean bed of political isms, perceived through the partially distorting lens of his chief disciple, Friedrich Engels, or understood as a figure of twentieth-century totalitarian Marxist regimes. Returning Marx to the Victorian confines of the nineteenth century, Jonathan Sperber, one of the United States leading European historians, challenges many of our misconceptions of this political firebrand turned London migr journalist. In this deeply humanizing portrait, Marx no longer is the Olympian soothsayer, divining the dialectical imperatives of human history, but a scholar-activist whose revolutionary Weltanschauung was closer to Robespierres than to those of twentieth-century Marxists. With unlimited access to the MEGA (the Marx-Engels Gesamtausgabe, the total edition of Marxs and Engelss writings), only recently available, Sperber juxtaposes the private man, the public agitator, and the philosopher-economist. We first see Marx as a young boy in the city of Trier, influenced by his father, Heinrich, for whom the French Revolution and its aftermath offered an opportunity to escape the narrowly circumscribed social and political position of Jews in the society. For Heinrichs generation, this worldview meant no longer being a member of the so-called Jewish nation, but for his son, the reverberations were infinitely greaternamely a life inspired by the doctrines of the Enlightenment and an implacable belief in human equality. Contextualizing Marxs personal storyhis rambunctious university years, his loving marriage to the devoted Jenny von Westphalen (despite an illegitimate child with the family maid), his childrens tragic deaths, the catastrophic financial problemswithin a larger historical stage, Sperber examines Marxs public actions and theoretical publications against the backdrop of a European continent roiling with political and social unrest. Guided by newly translated notes, drafts, and correspondence, he highlights Marxs often overlooked work as a journalist; his political activities in Berlin, Paris, and London; and his crucial role in both creating and destroying the International Working Mens Association. With Napoleon III, Bismarck, Adam Smith, and Charles Darwin, among others, as supporting players, Karl Marx becomes not just a biography of a man but a vibrant portrait of an infinitely complex time. Already hailed by Publishers Weekly as a major work . . . likely to be the standard biography of Marx for many years, Karl Marx promises to become the defining portrait of a towering historical figure. 34 illustrations This item ships from multiple locations. From the front flap," Over the past three decades, much has been written about the racist views of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. Most of this literature has been devoted to demonstrating that Marx, though of rabbinical descent on both sides of his family, was a fanatical anti-Semite. More limited attention has been given to the fact that the private correspondence of Marx and Engels is filled with contempt for Negroes. What is less well known and far more significant is that Marx and Engels privately developed and entire racial hierarchy and racial view of history by the 1860s, when they were at the height of their intellectual powers. By the middle of the decade, Marx was casting about fro some scientific or pseudoscientific justification for his racial notions.", Arlington House, 1979, paperback. New. The. . . Collected works, vol 26., Progress Publishers, 1990, Verso. Paperback. New. Paperback. 188 pages. Dimensions: 9.2in. x 6.2in. x 0.6in.This classic biography of Karl Marx, complete with Gareth Stedman Jones poignant introduction, is unlike any other account of its subject. New. Autor:

I. Omura, a. (Hg.)

Titel:

Familie Marx privat

ISBN-Nummer:

3050041188
