St Martins Pr, 1996. St Martins Pr 1996 First Edition Stated New/Very Good+ DJ Slight wear to bright jacket with tiny mended tears. From A remarkably gripping ending almost redeems the second appearance of Michelle "Mitch" Mitchell (Icewater Mansions), the scuba-diving northern Michigan tavern owner. Plucky Mitch, whose young son is off at boarding school, is lamenting the dry rot that's eating her bar when a cocky young man saunters in and asks for a drink. She persuades him that it's too early in the morning for whiskey, and that's the last anyone sees of Jimmy Calderon, whose rental car is soon found in the river. Jimmy was on the trail of his birth-father (whom he'd never known). The father belonged to a wealthy local family and is thought to have vanished and died after disgracing himself in Vietnam. Ray Calderon, Jimmy's older half-brothersame mom, different dad, he saysturns up next, eager to find the wayward Jimmy and, before long, eager to spend more time with Mitch. But Ray's got someone trailing him and a very convoluted story of his own about how he agreed to take a phony dishonorable discharge from the Navy for Jimmy's sake. Allyn's prose is fair, and the reader is seduced for a while by all the happy, decent folk who keep showing up. But all the sunny characters and cute local color eventually cry out for some kind of conflict. When it comes, about ten pages from the close, it's just too little, too late. (Apr. 1996 From BooklistTo a diver, black water is a potential nightmare. Michelle "Mitch" Mitchell opts to contend with that nightmare when a car slides off the road into a deepwater hole. Mitch's background as a Gulf Coast oil-rig diver puts her at the top of a short list of those willing to search for a body. There isn't one, but the man who rented the car, Jimmy Calderon, is missing. He may have been the illegitimate son of the late Owen McClain, patriarch of the area's wealthiest family. He made it to the widow McClain's home, discussed his parentage with her, and left angry and drunk. But if he did have an accident, where is the body Calderon's brother, Ray, helps Mitch undertake the search. They soon begin to feel that Jimmy's disappearance is no accident. This is the second Mitchell novel, and it is not as entertaining as the first. Still, as a small-town exercise in murder, it's better than most. Allyn is a high-quality writer sure to overcome this small misstep. Wes Lukowsky. First Edition Stated. Hardcover. New/Very Good+ DJ., St Martins Pr, 1996, Hardback. New. BEST OF THE YEAR NODS FROM AND PUBLISHERS WEEKLY! Kerascoet render Aurora and her friends in the huge-eyed style of classic children's book illustrations, but cuteness is just another Darwinian survival strategy here. Even on her clover-high scale, as Aurora discovers, romance is decided by social pecking order and murderous deceit. Douglas Wolk, New York Times Kerascoet's and Fabien Vehlmann's unsettling and gorgeous anti-fairy tale is a searing condemnation of our vast capacity for evil writ tiny. Join princess Aurora and her friends as they journey to civilization's heart of darkness in a bleak allegory about surviving the human experience. The sweet faces and bright leaves of Kerascoet's delicate watercolors serve to highlight the evil that dwells beneath Vehlmann's story as pettiness, greed, and jealousy take over. Beautiful Darkness is a harrowing look behind the routine politeness and meaningless kindness of civilized society., Woodbine House. Hardcover. New. Hardcover. 28 pages. As he wonders which person to choose, he thinks of his circle of friends and what they share together. Some friends are kids like Jimmy, who says funny things, and Manuel, who races with Moses on the playground. Other friends are grown-ups like Mom and Dad, and teachers. Neighbors too, can be friends, like Kate, his teen-aged babysitter. Kate owns two really cute iguanas. One of the iguanas, Zaki, is missing toes. Thats it! Moses will write about Zaki. After all, they really have something in common. Moses and Zaki both have special needs. Zaki, with her missing toes, must figure out new ways to move around and get to where she wants to go, which is exactly what Moses must do in his wheelchair! More than just a story about friendship, ALL KINDS OF FRIENDS, EVEN GREEN! looks at difference---such as being in a wheelchair or missing toes---in a unique way. With this beautifully photographed and engaging story, children discover that living with disability and facing its challenges can be seen as interesting, even positive.
