Innovative UV Technologies to Oxidize Organic and Organoleptic Chemicals Recent regulations are now requiring lower chlorinated disinfection by-products (DBPs) and inactivation of chlorine resistant pathogens such as Cryptosporidium parvum. Ultraviolet light is now considered a compliance technology for primary disinfection of surface waters in the Stage 2 Rules. One area of research for application of UV to disinfection of surface waters is the potential oxidative impacts of UV, especially high irradiance polychromatic UV sources, on organic and organoleptic compounds present in source waters. UV technologies, alone and as advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), may either oxidize organic compounds found in some source waters such as pesticides, herbicides, volatile organic compounds (VOC), and taste-and-odor compounds, and/or produce DBPs. This information is needed to allow utilities to make informed decisions on how best to apply UV technology for potable water. The objectives to this project were to (1) evaluate the efficacy of three different UV technologies for treatment of organic contaminants in waters of varying quality; (2) evaluate the UV technologies with additions of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to promote advanced oxidation (AOP) for treatment of the contaminants; (3) determine the extent of disinfection by-product (DBP) formation including aldehydes, carboxylic acids, and post-chlorination DBPs, following UV treatment; and (4) pilot test two UV technologies alone and under AOP conditions at two utility field sites for contaminant treatment to develop operational experience and preliminary cost and design data.
