At the level of intuition, many of us sense that modernity has stumbled, that we have fallen far short of the ethical mark. This is made evident in our personal shortcomings and in the structural inadequacies of our social, political, economic, religious and legal institutions. As a prescription for a lasting, positive change to this situation, THE BOOK OF TRANSFORMATION examines how behaving according to a "universal ethics" can ensure our moral evolution as a species and as a civilization. It also presents for consideration the radical idea that our nature as both human and divine is present at the genetic level and that in the course of its life-long development, this composite nature both influences and is influenced by the ethical and institutional context in which we find ourselves. As a consequence of presenting this idea, certain questions arise. How do we make it possible for our genetic composition to achieve its full ethical potential? How do we influence our social, political, economic, religious and legal environment in a positive way and avoid being influenced by its negativity? Is it just a matter of how we behave personally and collectively? Is it a matter of how much we care about the consequences of our choices? What makes these choices ethical? Should there be universal standards of conduct to ensure that we avoid personal and collective harm? To answer such pressing questions, this first volume of ETHICAL WRITINGS OF MODERNITY revisits the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth as found in The Gospel According To Matthew (The New Testament) in an effort to extract their moral significance and then apply it to the idea of a "universal ethics" -viewed as a secular and humanist conception of divinity itself -- which is informed by the various modern sciences and an understanding of modernity.
