The chapter headings are Crime in the Soviet Union, The Meaning of Crime to the Soviet Citizen, Sociology and the Immigrant, An Ethnographic Study: Brighton Beach, Immigrant Assumptions about Crime and Law, Survivors and Connivers, and Previous and Current Immigrants. That's followed by a bibliography and index. There's also a preface by the Author and an Introduction written by a Joseph Bensman. The beginning of the introduction states 'Lydia Roner presents a fascinating picture of crime in the Soviet Union and how Soviet émigrés continue their criminal behavior in the émigré community in Brighton Beach, New York. Crime is an essential ingredient of the way of life of virtually all Soviet citizens, Rosner reports. Top party leaders, NKVD leaders, state officials, regional party leaders, plant managers, and other officials loot state-operated industries for their personal and institutional gain. The ability to gain personal wealth, privilege, dachas, and diamonds rests on control of goods and services that can be legally diverted from the state in exchange for other illegally diverted goods and services in vast and complex patterns of bribery and corruption and in subsequent mutual blackmail. The blackmail keeps the system in place: exposure of crime in one area of the system necessarily leads to exposure of the entire system.' As you can see from the photos, the covers are in very nice condition. There is one spot of soiling on the rear cover. The corners and edges are in excellent shape. There is a little bit of crinkling at the bottom of the spine. The red lettering on both the front and spine is very bright. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages. There are no binding issues. These pages are exceptionally clean. I'm scrolling through and not seeing any soiling at all. I'm also not seeing any creasing of any kind. There are no markings. There are no attachments. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. I ended up turning over all the pages (140 in total) and would note that I saw a few very small and very light marks on the margin of a few of the last pages. I'm guessing that there was a short penciled line placed next to a paragraph of interest that was erased, leaving a bit of a shadow of itself. I'm compulsive about reporting these things, but it is very, very, minor. The pages are in top-not shape. And that is it for condition., Books<
