John Skelton (1464?-1529) has some claim to being the first great modern English poet. He has not always been popular: though in this century Robert Graves and W.H. Auden have advocated his work, he was less at home in earlier centuries. Alexander Pope found him 'beastly', and Puttenham and Warton both saw him as a squandered talent. They objected to the very things which most recommend him to us: his kind of wit, which can be tender, insinuating, savage, erotic, but is always a function of tone: and the sense that the poet's language is close to that of the world in which he moved.
