Defecting in Place: Women Claiming Responsibility for Their Own Spiritual Lives - Taschenbuch

1995, ISBN: 9780824515331

Gebundene Ausgabe, ID: 737861301

New York, NY Bantam Books, 1993. Hardcover First Ed thus, Third Printing. Very Good: Shows just a hint of foxing to the top edge and fore-edge; there are several small patches of faint smudgingat the front panel; the lower rear corner is mildly bumped and there are three tiny cracks in the leather at that point that resulted from it; the binding leans somewhat, while remaining perfectly secure; the text is clean. A structurally sound, tightly bound copy; clean, sturdy, and quite presentable. NOT a Remainder. NOT a Book-Club Edition. NOT an Ex-Library copy. 8vo. 271pp. Brown vinyl over boards; stamped authors signature in gold leaf on lower right of the front panel. Louis L'Amour Hardcover Collection, First Ed thus, Third Printing. Previously published under a slightly diffierent title and under the nom de plume "Tex Burns". Hardback: Leatherette. From the pen of the master. If you, like me, love the books by Louis L'Amour, and you've never read this novel, do check it out. It's one of his finest books; a real pleasure to read. I couldn't put the book down and was mesmerized and intrigued by the adventure. Now I remember why I loved Louis L'Amour so much, how his characters are gritty, but real, and how you can almost smell and feel the authenticity of the old west in his books. On top of that his stories seem true and you know the places he writes about are actually there. I am often amazed at just how well Louis L'Amour's wrote. I could hardly think of anything else other than to keep on reading to the very end of this book. Lots of action with rustlers, gun hands, cattle, and great characters that coupled with a tight plot. If you haven't ever experienced the masterful l"Amour, you could do no better than beginning with this one. Do yourself a favor and check out this book. I predict, you'll love it. In this one, Hopalong Cassidy rides into a firestorm of violence and betrayal. I've never read any of Mulford's original Hopalong books, so I can't compare them with those L'Amour penned, but I thoroughly enjoy Louis' version. According to the afterword by L'Amour's son, Louis refused to take credit for the four Hopalong Cassidy books he wrote in the early '50s because the publisher wanted the milder version of the character that Louis actually ended up creating, rather than the harder and not as likeable original Mulford character that Louis wanted to model his character on. I can understand this, an artist wanting to stay true to his vision, but I think L'Amour did a wonderful job and was truer to the more loveable character that by that time had made it to the big screen and TV and was loved by millions of kids and adults across the country. L'Amour's Hopalong Cassidy also fits the style of some of his own heoric characters in his later books published under his own name, so it was obviously and easy character for Louis to write even if it wasn't the one he wanted to write. The four Hopalong books by L'Amour, The Rustlers of West Fork, Trail to Seven Pines, The Riders of High Rock, and Trouble Shooter are a must for any L'Amour fan and should be included in a collection of the original Mulford books if for no other reason than because they continued the series and apparently reflected a newer gentler Hopalong Cassidy. I had been aware of Louis L'Amour's position as a literary phenomenon for some time; according to the author's biography at the end of this book, he wrote more than 100 books. L'Amour fills his narratives with intriguing details, and creates a powerful portrait of the land of the southwest itself. I really got a sense of the danger posed both by the harsh environment and the equally harsh human beings who populate the region. One might say that the ancient, unforgiving desert is the most significant "character" in the book. There is plenty of action and suspense. Louis Dearborn L'Amour (1908 – 1988) was an American author. His books consisted primarily of Western novels (though he called his work 'Frontier Stories'), however, he also wrote historical fiction (The Walking Drum), science fiction (The Haunted Mesa), nonfiction (Frontier), as well as poetry and short-story collections. Many of his stories were made into movies. L'Amour's books remain popular and most have gone through multiple printings. At the time of his death many of his 105 existing works were in print (89 novels, 14 short-story collections, and two full-length works of nonfiction) and he was considered one of the world's most popular writers. Fom the pen of the master., Bantam Books, 1993., New York, NY Crossroad Publishing , 1995. Paperback Near Fine in Wraps: shows only the most minute indications of use: light wear to the head of the backstrip; a couple of small stains at the bottom edge of the text block. Binding shows the slightest lean, while remaining perfectly secure; text clean. Very close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. 312pp., Notes, Bibliography. This book presents the findings of a study on how feminist women relate to Protestant and Roman Catholic Christianity, told through quotes from their responses to the study questions. There is some commentary on the responses, which provides a valuable framework through which to view them, but the real power of this book comes from hearing the struggles and triumphs of women in the church (and out of the church) in their own words, as they try to come to terms with spirituality and God without sacrificing their own personhood. If you have felt alienated from the church because of your gender, you are not alone! I would recommend it to any woman who has committed herself to a spiritual path and who is struggling to find her place in what is essentially a patriarchal religion. I wish more male priests and pastors would read this book as well, because it would really open some eyes as to what women are feeling and thinking and how much we are often excluded in conventional worship. The final message of the book is that women are creating a feminist spirituality to make up for the lack of a place for us in more conventional congregations, and that this is not only possible but healthy and liberating. Overall, inspiring., Crossroad Publishing , 1995.
