Thunder In the Mountains: The West Virginia Mine War, 1920&#821 - Taschenbuch

ISBN: 0822954265

[SR: 339571], Paperback, [EAN: 9780822954262], University of Pittsburgh Press, University of Pittsburgh Press, Book, [PU: University of Pittsburgh Press], University of Pittsburgh Press, The West Virginia mine war of 1920-21, a major civil insurrection of unusual brutality on both sides, even by the standards of the coal fields, involved thousands of union and nonunion miners, state and private police, militia, and federal troops.  Before it was over, three West Virginia counties were in open rebellion, much of the state was under military rule, and bombers of the U.S. Army Air Corps had been dispatched against striking miners. The origins of this civil war were in the Draconian rule of the coal companies over the fiercely proud miners of Appalachia.  It began in the small railroad town of Matewan when Mayor C. C. Testerman and Police Chief Sid Hatfield sided with striking miners against agents of the Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency, who attempted to evict the miners from company-owned housing.  During a street battle, Mayor Testerman, seven Baldwin-Felts agents, and two miners were shot to death.Hatfield became a folk hero to Appalachia.  But he, like Testerman, was to be a martyr.  The next summer, Baldwin-Felts agents assassinated him and his best friend, Ed Chambers, as their wives watched, on the steps of the courthouse in Welch, accelerating the miners’ rebellion into open warfare.Much neglected in historical accounts, Thunder in the Mountains is the only available book-length account of the crisis in American industrial relations and governance that occured during the West Virginia mine war of 1920-21. , 2595, Labor & Industrial Relations, 2581, Economics, 3, Business & Money, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 10020683011, Human Resources, 10020684011, Conflict Resolution & Mediation, 2637, Human Resources & Personnel Management, 10020685011, Knowledge Capital, 3568203011, Outsourcing, 3, Business & Money, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 14278871, State & Local, 4853, United States, 4808, Americas, 9, History, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 5011, Military, 3568213011, Afghan War, 5012, Aviation, 1043892, Canada, 5015, Intelligence & Espionage, 387040011, Iraq War, 5016, Korean War, 16233491, Life & Institutions, 5017, Napoleonic Wars, 5018, Naval, 5019, Pictorials, 16244451, Prisoners of War, 16244121, Regiments, 5020, Strategy, 5021, Uniforms, 5022, United States, 5025, Vietnam War, 1043894, War of 1812, 5026, Weapons & Warfare, 5030, World War I, 5031, World War II, 9, History, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 5571261011, Labor & Industrial Relations, 5571258011, Specific Topics, 5571255011, Politics & Government, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 468220, Business & Finance, 491564, Accounting, 684243011, Banking, 491578, Business Communication, 684244011, Business Development, 491580, Business Ethics, 491506, Business Law, 491584, Economics, 684245011, Entrepreneurship, 491594, Finance, 491602, Human Resources, 684246011, International Business, 684247011, Investments & Securities, 684248011, Management, 491624, Marketing, 684249011, Real Estate, 684250011, Sales, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books, 491422, United States, 468230, History, 468206, Humanities, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books, 491464, Political Science, 684292011, Civil Rights, 684293011, Government, 491470, International Relations, 491472, Political History, 684294011, Political Ideologies, 684295011, Public Affairs, 491474, Public Policy, 468214, Social Sciences, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books

The West Virginia mine wars--and particularly their climactic episode, the miner's march on Logan in August and September 1921--make for a rousing good story, and no one has told it as well or as fully as Lon Savage does in Thunder in the Mountains. Drawing on his years of experience as a professional journalist, Savage has written a masterful narrative, full of apt description and colorful characterizations, yet based solidly on the historical record., [PU: University of Pittsburgh Press]
