Paperback. 304 pages. Dimensions: 8.5in. x 5.5in. x 0.8in.Carl Schmitt (1888-1985) was one of the twentieth centurys most brilliant and disturbing critics of liberalism. He was also one of the most important intellectuals to offer his services to the Nazis, for which he was dubbed the crown jurist of the Third Reich. Despite this fateful alliance Schmitt has exercised a profound influence on post-war European political and legal thought - on both the Right and the Left, from Francos legal advisors to Italian Marxists. In this illuminating book, Jan-Werner Muller traces for the first time the permutations of Schmitts ideas after the Second World War and relates them to broader political developments. Offering a concise account of Schmitts life and career along with discussions of his key concepts, Muller explains why interest in the political theorist continues. He analyses Schmitts post-1945 writings on international order, partisanship, and terror. He explores in detail the responses of liberal thinkers to Schmitts challenging legacy and the highly ingenious (and often problematic) defences of liberalism they devised. Muller offers a range of insights into the liberalization of political thinking in post-authoritarian societies and the persistent vulnerabilities and blind spots of certain strands of Western liberalism. Finally, he also assesses the current uses of Schmitts thought in debates on globalization and the quest for a liberal world order. Jan-Werner Muller is a fellow of All Souls College, Oxford. He is the author of Another Country: German Intellectuals, Unification and National Identity also published by Yale University Press. This item ships from multiple locations. Recent years have seen a growing role for private military contractors in national and international security. To understand the reasons for this, Elke Krahmann examines changing models of the state, the citizen and the soldier in the UK, the US and Germany. She focuses on both the national differences with regard to the outsourcing of military services to private companies and their specific consequences for the democratic control over the legitimate use of armed force. Tracing developments and debates from the late eighteenth century to the present, she explains the transition from the centralized warfare state of the Cold War era to the privatized and fragmented security governance, and the different national attitudes to the privatization of force. Engaging boyhood experiences are followed by pioneer paratrooper training and combat in Europe in World War II. Assigned as special agent, Kormann goes behind the lines to apprehend Nazi war criminals and uncover a mass grave. As an Army Counter Intelligence Corps field office commander in Berlin 1945-47, he is assigned to track down Hitlers deputy, Martin Bormann, and the American traitor, Axis Sally. He foresees the Soviet threat and the coming Cold War, rescues a German scientist from the Soviet NKVD in a case that made international headlines, and reveals Russian espionage and kidnapping efforts. As a new State Department officer in 1950, Kormann is placed in charge of three counties in Bavaria in the final days of the American occupation of Germany, where the requisitioning of land for a NATO tank training area displaces thousands of Germans and creates an uproar. In subsequent Cold War assignments he is involved in historic actions: the abortive Hungarian Revolution; international efforts to deal with the Russians; the U-2 spy plane affair; and the Berlin Wall. He served as political officer at Embassy Manila at the onset of the Marcos regime; as officer-in-charge at Embassy Benghazi, Libya, when it was attacked and burned during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War; as deputy chief of mission at Embassy Cairo during the Kissinger Middle East shuttle diplomacy; and on the staff of George H. W. Bush when he was Director of Central Intelligence. John Kormanns memoir is timely and significant--an engrossing chronicle of one Foreign Service officers courage, commitment, and good sense in war and in peace. His personal life and professional achievements as a diplomat and earlier, as a military officer in postwar Germany, trace the trajectory of Americas emergence as the dominant superpower in the twentieth century, providing a ground-level perspective on many of the major crises that punctuated the Cold War era. --The Hon. DANIEL A. ODONOHUE, President Diplomatic and Consular Officers, Retired John Kormanns book runs the gamut from harrowing incidents to hilarious vignettes. His experiences reflect just how exciting and diverse a career in foreign service can be. Particularly noteworthy is the way he used his diplomatic and military skills to benefit both sectors. This memoir provides real insight into the challenges the author and his family faced on four continents. --The Hon. Introduction by Professor Willard A. Fletcher, History Department, University of Delaware. Soviet Jews were executed by gassing vehicles or by shooting in groups ranging from a few individuals to thousands of men, women and children. The perpetrators of these mass murders, who allegedly killed a million people following the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union, were organized in four special task forces called Einsatzgruppen. Some of the major activities documented in this volume are the mass killings at Babi Yar near Kiev, the Christmas massacre at Simferopol, attempts to destroy all traces of the executions by exhuming and burning the bodies, as well as the disguising of the killings as anti-partisan activities. Descriptions of the killings generally stem from those who committed the crimes. Contains 32 documents of source materials, carefully chosen from the thousands preserved at the U.S. National Archives. A detailed table of contents lists and provides the source for each document. The volumes in the series are grouped topically: PLANNING AND PREPARATION 1. Legalizing the Holocaust: The Early Phase, 1933-1939, 2. Legalizing the Holocaust: The Later Phase, 1939-1943, 3. The Crystal Night Pogrom, 4. Propaganda and Aryanization, 1938-1944, 5. Jewish Emigration from 1933 to the Evian Conference of 1938, 6. Jewish Emigration 1938-1940: Rublee Negotiations and the Intergovernmental Committee, 7. Jewish Emigration: The S.S. St. Louis Affair and Other Cases THE KILLING OF THE JEWS 8. The Judicial System and the Jews in Nazi Germany RESCUE ATTEMPTS 14. Relief and Rescue of Jews from Nazi Oppressio, 2010, Cambridge University Press. Paperback. New. Paperback. 192 pages. Dimensions: 8.8in. x 6.0in. x 0.6in.Drawing on East German, Soviet, and Western sources as well as years of study, travel, and military service in Germany and Eastern Europe, Major Macgregor examines East Germanys critical political-military role in the Soviet strategy to maintain control of Eastern Europe. He offers an analysis of the trends that have shaped Soviet-East German military collaboration; traces its origins in much earlier forms of Russo-German military alliance, and observes a revival of past strategic and military convergence as Moscow attempts to preserve control of an increasingly unstable Eastern Europe. The Soviet-East German military alliance has thus emerged as the backbone of the Warsaw Pact, and in the context of political uncertainty elsewhere in the Eastern bloc an enlarged military and political role in Soviet security policy for the East German state seems inevitable.
