Softcover. Very Good Condition. Stories about siblings abound in literature, drama, comedy, biography, and history. We rarely talk about our own siblings without emotion, whether with love and gratitude, or exasperation, bitterness, anger and hate. Nevertheless, the subject of what it is to be and to have a sibling is one that has been ignored by psychiatrists, psychologists and therapists. In My Dearest Enemy, My Dangerous Friend, Dorothy Rowe presents a radically new way of thinking about siblings that unites the many apparently contradictory aspects of these complex relationships. This helps us to recognise the various experiences involved in sibling relationships as a result of the fundamental drive for survival and validation, enabling us to reach a deeper understanding of our siblings and ourselves. She is Australian, lives in London, and has a Big Sister. Size: Mid Sized Paperback ( 7¾" - 9¾" tall ). 376 pages. A very clean secondhand copy, with no damage to report. . SYNOPSIS: I felt happier than I had been for years and I wanted to tell people about it but it's not a good idea to show too much emotion in business you know. You get the job done and you keep your feelings to yourself.' - (Peter, aged 45).'And I kind of rediscovered what I think I'd found when I was really young that things were really quite easy, that I could do a lot of things that I saw other people do. I didn't have to be scared and I think it was just the scared aspect that was making me see everything so negatively. So I tried it and I kept going.' - (Daniel, aged 35)."The Hearts of Men" reveals the emotional lives of men as told in their own words. With gut-wrenching honesty more than a hundred men from all walks of life share their stories with Chris Barker. They include sportsmen, executives, retired soldiers, homeless drug users, Buddhists and members of the men's movement. What Chris Barker finds is a striking divergence in the ways in which men's emotional lives can generate personal happiness or despair. The book shows that men do talk about their emotions and with a surprising degree of insight.Thoughtful, provocative and carefully researched, "The Hearts of Men" reveals much about emotion and happiness, and the possibility of change, both for men and their partners and families. It winds along through most of the great themes of American fiction (tradition vs. innovation, the weight of the past, the dehumanizing effects of industrialization, the rifts between parents and children, men and women), picking up bits of history along the way, and carrying you wherever Holman wishes. The opening pages introduce at least 15 characters (not including the 11 premature babies born to dog trainer Manda Frank), a rough outline of the history of Three Chimneys, Virginia, and more information on small-farm cheesemaking than you might ever have thought you'd would want to learn, let alone absorb with fascination. Along with its moving themes, the pleasures of this novel are in Holman's grasp of human (and not only human) nature, and her gift for expressing this through unexpected details of daily life--that the cows in the local dairy give more milk when Sinatra's playing; that the dirty secret under an eighth-grade girl's mattress is Bride Magazine. This quirky novel will remind listeners of a John Irving novel with its wildly diverse characters acting in extreme situations amid a vivid setting. Laural Merlington informs the plot with her skillful ability to convey the conflicting emotions and self-doubts of each character. There's the new mother of 11 babies, born of fertility treatments; the minister who talked her into having all of them; and his son, August Vaughn, farmhand and longtime secret admirer of Margaret Prickett. And it's Margaret who creates the mammoth cheese in an effort to save her family's century-old dairy farm.. Hard Cover. New/As New. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall., Atlantic Monthly Press, 2003, ABC Books, 2007. Reprint. Soft cover. Fine. 5th or later Printing. 347 pages. This book is in near fine or better condition. SYNOPSIS: Lost for Words is the fourteenth book by Australian journalist and author, Hugh Lunn. In his introduction, Lunn bemoans the loss of Australian words, expressions and slang that has occurred since the middle of last century, and their replacement with Americanisms heard on TV. In this book, he draws together a collection of rogue-ish, rich, direct, expansive and expressive words and phrases that used to make up the Australian idiom before it was hijacked by overseas influences. Lunn includes chapters on what Mum used to say, relationships and courting, what Dad used to say, eating and drinking, work, superstition, sport & leisure activities, entertainment, greetings and exclamations, disease and illness, domestic science, transport, religion, grandma and grandpa's wisdom, schooling, manners, shopping, gossip, clothing, children's games, technology, weather, weights & measures, money, animals and swearing. Included is a 15-part radio serial called "Lost for Words: the story of Grace and Bert and their trials and tribulations bringing up a young family after the war", which illustrates the use of many words and expressions. While it may seem that a book on lost language could be a dry read, Lunn had made the subject delightful, nostalgic, funny and interesting. My favourite expressions are: "He wouldn't know how to pour sarsaparilla out of a boot if the instructions were printed on the sole", "He's got a look on him as though he's just licked shit off a thistle", "... he came home to `a cold shoulder and a hot tongue'" (a nagging, annoyed wife), "If your brains were dynamite, they wouldn't blow the wax out of your ears", "She could talk under wet cement with a mouthful of marbles", "She's so mean, if she owned the ocean, she wouldn't give you a wave", "This medicine would kill a brown dog", "I felt a bit of a galah" and "I'll slap you with a wet tram ticket". Even with my Dutch cultural heritage, many of the expressions are familiar to me and I am sure it shows my age that I still quite often say "Wouldn't it rot your socks!" What a shame we have lost such a rich, evocative, expansive, euphonious, metaphoric, enthusiastic language. Lunn continues this delightful theme with "Words Fail Me". Quantity Available: 1. SYNOPSIS: Who will ever forget Graeme Smith striding to the wicket with a broken hand in the third Test match in Australia? This after already winning the series. If ever there was a moment to define the man, that was it. The Proteas entered the history books in that series, the first South African team to beat the Hussies at home. Earlier in 2008, they beat England and drew a Test series in India, making 2008 one of the most successful years on record. For good measure, South Africa also became the highest ranked one-day side in the world. Smith pinpoints the tour to Pakistan in October 2007 as the time his team started taking shape, and in "A Captain's Diary" he records an extraordinary 18 month journey, from Karachi to Newlands via Lord's, Leeds, Melbourne and Sydney. Smith takes the reader behind the scenes: from the high drama on the field, where a game can turn on its head in a mere 30 minutes, to the dangers of touring Pakistan where one is surrounded day and night by security personnel bristling with guns. He reveals key, behind-the-scenes moments from team talks and selection to locker room banter, moments which determined their fate as they sought to dethrone Australia as the best team in the world.
