Can something that is constantly mutating be defined and discussed easily? Obviously not. Nevertheless, the historian's task involves sifting through the evidence of the past in order to write its story and more importantly interpret its relevance for today. The Age of Romanticism and the people associated with it have assumed legendary proportions. To understand their historical importance, it is critical to reach beyond the myths to the events, people, and legacy of this fascinating era. Such a process must begin with definitions. How does one define Romanticism or Romantic? Noted scholars suggest one cannot speak of Romanticism, but of Romanticisms, because Romantic artists' values differed according to nationality, gender, and time period. Despite the wide variation, certain common themes pervade the Romantic era: a cult of emotion, a stress on the imagination, the importance of personal feelings, an almost religious-like attachment to nature, a fascination with the exotic, a rejection of progress in Western civilization and a nostalgia for the past, and suspicion of uniformity at the expense of individuality. Romantics also believed in the personal and intuitive truth, the emphasis on man's spiritual side, and the important role writers, painters, and musicians had in bringing those concepts together through their works. The Age of Romanticism involves events in Europe from approximately 1770 to 1880. Romantic writers, artists, and musicians can be found throughout the world, but this overview focuses on German, British, and French Romanticism with brief mention of Italian and Russian.
