Oysterville: Roads to Grandpa's Village - Taschenbuch

1992, ISBN: 9780295972251

ID: 525189969

1841. The early days of Rockland County and its various towns and townships, are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this NEW 16 Page Booklet reprinted from two hard-to-find books, the 1841 edition of Historical Collections of the State of New York by John Warner Barber and Henry Howe, and the 1940 edition of New York, a Guide to the Empire State. The spiral-bound booklet is printed one-sided on 60# paper, with the print enlarged for easier reading. A clear vinyl sheet has been added to protect the front cover. The communities mentioned include: Clarkstown, New City, Haverstraw, Warren, Sampsondale, Caldwell's Landing, Orangetown, Dobbs Ferry, Nyack, Ramapo, Tappan, Piermont, and Stony Point. Among the topics in the booklet are: the Storming of Stony Point by Gen. Wayne with his detailed account to Washington; a descriptive account of the Execution of the spy Andre and the return of his remains to England; a Royal Snuffbox and a Silver Inkstand; the Baynard Lane Cooperative Experiment; the Stony Point Battlefield Reservation; and the De Wint Mansion, Washington's headquarters at one time. Names/Surnames mentioned include: Gen. Anthony Wayne, Col. Jeduthan Baldwin, Armstrong, Thomas Wandle, Arthur Johnson, Dupuy, Rev. Demarat, Ralph Borsodi, Dan Beard, James A. Farley, Joshua Hett Smith, James Wood, Robert Owen, James Monroe Hewlett, Major John Smith, William Palmer, Nicholas Williamson and James Green, Michael Cornelison, Claes Jansen Kuyper. ILLUSTRATIONS depict the Northern view of Stony Point on the Hudson River and a view of the place where Andre was executed. The Howe/Barber history covers the development of this area until about 1841, while excerpts from the WPA book, give a nostalgic glympse from a 1940 vantage point, including interesting historical notes, especially as they relate to sightseeing possibilities. There's also a small map of the area from a 1948 booklet printed by the New York Telephone Company. . Limited Edition Reprint. Spiral/Comb . New/No Jacket. 8.5" x 11". Private Press., 1841, Seattle, Washington, USA: University of Washington Press, 1992. First Thus. Paperback. Very Good/No Jacket. Earl Thollander. First University of Washington Paperback Printing. Trade Paperback in Very Good Condition. Oysterville was declared a national historic site in 1976.Tan cover with bold green titles with cover illustration by Earl Thollander; the other illustrations are also by him-impressive line drawings throughout. (Don't miss the sketch on the rear flyleaf!). Cover is very clean, light wear to upper edge and corner, no spine creasing. Internals very clean and free of any markings, no creases. Willard Espy's memoir is delightful, filled with memorable characters, with no celebrities, from his family trove of people over the centuries, from witches in Salem, Massachusetts, to pioneer oystermen on the Pacific coast of Washington state. Drawing on conversations with aged relations and friends, on historic letters and documents, Willard Espy reconstructs his own personal past to provide an account of his family that was born, grew up, and died, as the United States was being born, shaped, formed, explored, expanded. 300 pages. 6.5 x 10 inches. 1992, University of Washington Press, Seattle, Washington, USA, University of Washington Press, 1992
