Reason, Morality, and Beauty: Essays on the Philosophy of Immanuel Kant (200 Years of Immanuel Kant) - gebunden oder broschiert

2006, ISBN: 9780195683936

ID: 844241382

Oxford University Press, 2006. Hardcover. New. 14 x 21 cm. Two hundred years after Immanuel Kant, in a world disenchanted with modernity, it is important to retrospect on the philosophy of the project of enlightenment and modernity. Reason, Morality, and Beauty articulates reflections, across cultures, continents and academic disciplines, on Kant`s rigorous universalism in understanding the character of morality, freedom, religion, and art. Should morality be understood as a categorical imperative directing us to unconditionally act not only in accordance with, but also for, the sake of duty? Is the self free only so far as it acts in accordance with the dictates of Reason? What is the role of aesthetic pleasure in making an aesthetic judgement? These and related issues are answered by these reflections. Section one elaborates on Kantian morality and challenges from Aristotelianism which allows for the presence of particulars, friendship, love and inclinations in moral matters. Kant`s self is a self whose freedom consists in being self-legislated by reason. Section two in the book locates this movement to freedom, as being perhaps rationalistically narrow and constrained. Section three articulates Kantian views on the place of public reasoning in religious discourse. The last section examines aesthetic judgement as incorporating an element of disinterested pleasure in the appearing of the art object vis-à-vis some claims of modern art, that art may have nothing to do with aesthetics and aesthetic pleasure. With contributions from scholars across disciplines and from all over the world, this elegantly written collection brings together diverse views about modernity and highlights the cosmopolitan nature of Kant`s works. Like its com panion volume Terror, Peace, and Universalism, this book will find a wide audience amongst scholars and students of Western philosophy, continental philosophy, epistemology, and the social sciences.
